Title: Drew Brees just a matter of time?
Post by: Dave Gray on March 07, 2006, 04:24:32 pm
Another web site owner has passed along to me some inside info that Drew Brees will be a fin...at any cost.

This seems great to me.

I have some thoughts on Brees, though.  I thought then (and think now) that he was the proper choice to make with our first round draft pick.  We ended up taking Fletcher.  ...not because of Fletcher's skills, but because our need for a 5th corner paled in comparison to the top QB in the draft.  I understand Wanny's thinking (that Fiedler could be groomed, and that we needed the best athlete available), but I think he was wrong.

However, if we had drafted Brees, I don't think he'd be the QB that he is now.  Even in San Diego, he developed slowly and was on his way out -- thus the pick of Philip Rivers.  That was with a phenomenal back in Tomlinson and a great TE in Gates.  By the way, a standout TE always helps a developing QB...moreso than a stretch-the-field type of receiver.

But in Miami, look at what we had  when he would've been here developing.  ...a horrible O-line....rotating second rate RBs....a wacky coaching staff.

I'm not sure that he'd be the same player that we'll be getting...and that's a good thing.

I've said for awhile that if we had picked him, he would've been gone by now. I'm glad he got the time to develop in San Diego. My biggest fear now is that operation he just had.

According to Dave LaMont on the radio this morning, Drew Brees's shoulder surgery has minor rotator cuff damage but the repair job went extremely well, and they expect him to be back up and throwing in May, pending proper rehab.

They said that its not a repeat case of Chad Pennington.

I personally think Chad would have been fine, if the Jets hadn't rushed him back to play the season opener.  ::)

I'd be thrilled to have a new #9 jersey on the field in 2006.

I think he didn't play that badly in those "developmental years". People tend to re-write history. San Diego was an unsuccessful team, thus it gets projected on the QB. Brees spent one year on the bench and then put together 3000+ yards in 3 out of 4 seaons. The only season he missed 3000 was when he only played in 11 games. The guy has been solid in his career.

I am concerned about his shoulder currently though.

I just don't see Drew Brees as Miami's "next Dan Marino" like a lot of people do.  He a good young NFL QB, but let's see him actually play WELL in a meaningful game first before bowing down and gawking at the young kid.

I don't hear anyone calling him the next Marino, but we haven't had a viable QB since then.  I think that he can be a playmaker...not a superstar.  ...and that's all we need.

After years of suffering through Jay, AJ, and Gus, I'll be happy with a guy like Brees.

Here's an article from the Sun Sentinel.  Dave Hyde agrees with Dave Gray on Drew Brees being our next QB:

Another brilliant opinion spoken.  These words come from Bob Flanders at DolphinBlog.com:

Wanny and Spielman's biggest blunder in their 5 years here with the Phins was passing up Drew Brees for Jamal Fletcher. I've said it many times before---It happened because Wanny loved---and I mean loved Jay Fiedler.

There's a scene in Brokeback Mountain where Heath Ledgers character Ennis, was embracing his partner Jacks shirt, and at the same time putting it close to his face to smell it. Awwww....

I can almost envision Wanny doing that with Jay's jersey.

You're probably right.  Keep this in mind.... Flanders' site was the first one that got me into sports blogging, and from there, I was able to hook up with both TDMMC and Phinatics.

I've been a member of Flanders' site since it first came out as FireDaveWannstedt.com at the end of the 2002 season.

All well and good, and from what I have read from when he posts, he has some great thoughts. But it gets really old reading "Bob Flanders said this, Bob Flanders said that, etc."

C'mon dude.  I've only posted from his site on here once a week at the most.  The thing is, I can't just post his pieces without giving him proper credit.

Somehow, reading this statement made my left eyeball twitch uncontrollably for at least 5 seconds...  :-\

You're right, Philly Fin Fan. Never any thoughts of his own.

He's a Flanders Groupie.  ::)

The only thing that should get smacked in this thread is the fact that someone quoted Brokeback Mountain ... I mean holy shit! Who the hell could watch that movie and then have the nuts to admit it by quoting it! AHHHH .... I need some real football news!

And give Tommy a break, I lurk enough to see that most of his posts seem to be his own.

Just a tad bit creepy, that's all.  You're obsession with Bob Flanders as of late is starting to reach Wannstedt/Fiedler like proportions.
