Sage is gone.

I'll assume, for the purpose of this thread that Culpepper get's the OK from the team doc's.

Given Culpepper's injury, and the fact that he may or may not be ready for the season opener, I think its imperative to have a servicable backup.  Who do you think we should go after?

Kitna signed with the Lions today. Gus won't come back. Who does that leave?
1.McCown- may want a better situation where he might start (i.e. Baltimore)
2.Collins- Might not be suited for out system. Plus is immobile as a boulder
3. Brooks- Might not be a bad choice, but probably will opt for Baltimore and a starting gig.
4. Weinke- I'd wouldn't mind this option.
5. Garcia- rumored to be linked to the Eagles.

Fielder is out there.  As is Ramsey, maybe.  I think Griese is available but I cringe at the thought of seeing him on the field again.

What happened to Aaron Brooks?

I dont think Brooks is being chased after anyone..

Let me tell you, I'd love Aaron Brooks as a backup.  He's got some skill, but New Orleans is a slush-box for QB's.

Most likely he'll be cut tdue to his high contract. New Orleans won't pay him that much to be a back up. Anyway, NFL Radio has him and Collins (since Jim Fassel is the OC) linked to Baltimore.

I forgot to add guys like Ramsey and Griese. Oh well, I don't want to give 14 options on the poll!

What about Anthony Wright?  Or one of the guys from Dallas?  Matt Schaub?

Atlanta wants a first round pick for him. They may never get the chance to trade him with those demands.

     Originally, I said Tommy Maddox.  However, I think Aaron Brooks would be better suited as a backup.  Jeff Garcia is an intriguing option as well.  However, THE ONE PERSON  I DO NOT WANT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOEVER, IS JAY FIEDLER!!!!!!  STAY THE HELL OUT OF MIAMI YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF DOG CRAP!!!

I'm probably the only person here who liked Fiedler, but I agree. He isn't our new backup.

brooks would be an interesting option. again depends on the price. probably gonna be a bit too high for what we are at right now, but maybe if the market dries up. there is a thinking around the league that guys need to get their money now because as each day passes, the money pool is drying up.

We may see Gus re-sign again at a reduced salary.  I think they got rid of him only because he would cost $4.38 million against the cap next season, and that number is not justifiable for a backup QB.    If Gus goes elsewhere,  I wouldn't mind seeing Brooks, Maddox, or Weinke.  Also, drafting a QB in the low rounds (Jacobs or McNeal), would make for an interesting scenario. 

Garcia?  Wouldn't mind at all.  He flourished with the Niners before San Fran. imploded.  Just don't ask him to lead a team.  Here he has solid group that could be a pretty good fit.  But as a backup, that's prolly not on his agenda.

I picked Garcia. I think he fits the back-up role very well, and would do a formidable job.

I heard the Eagles rumours as well, so it seems unlikely.

i voted for "some rookie" but then i remembered that the dolphins still have brock berlin under contract and he's currently on assignment to nfl europe .. sooo that's my choice

I voted for "some rookie" as well, but I think that a great option for a backup QB now would be Omar Jacobs. We should be able to get him on day two of the draft, so not too expensive and it gives us a talented-but-raw developmental guy behind Daunte.

It's pretty refreshing to be debating who we want as backup instead of who should be starting at quarterback!  ;D

Personally, I think there are many capable backups out there including many who have been on our roster. before I believe most of the past guys can perform well enough behind a competent team, which we now have, and do ok. I also think there are many others available as well. 

Keep in mind, said backup may possibly be the opening day starter...

In no way do I want Maddox, or Ramsey anywhere near Miami. I don't even want them in Jacksonville, Atlanta, or Tampa Bay because that is too close to Miami for my comfort. Brooks could be a viable backup and I know this will make Brian cringe but I would bring Griese back over Ramsey or Maddox!!!!! I would try to re-sign Gus as he wasn't great but he did get the job done for the most part and he already has a year under his belt in this offense.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jeff Garcia as the backup.  One, he's mobile.  Two, he's a decent leader.  He is a little long in the tooth as far as a starter goes, but he's a smart player.  If he were forced into action say in week 8 or 9, he'd have our offense down pat.  He's got a nice arm and throws well on the move.

If we could score Garcia, that would be huge.

But we're not talking potential.  We have our long-term starter, the last thing we need is someone coming in and then crying for playing time.  We're talking about a vet that is good enough to lead the team in case of injury for a limited amount of time, not someone to take over eventually.

If Garcia can be had for a year contract at about two million, I say to scoop him up.

This is why I cast my vote for Weinke. He's a back up and I think he's fine with that.

I'd like to give Greise another shot ... think he got screwed by the Wanny-Elf love affair and a shitty line. Prob too expensive now and would always be looking for a starting job.
