Title: Culpepper Passes Physical, Trade Official
Post by: TonyB0D on March 15, 2006, 12:26:27 pm
its a sealed deal!!

QB Culpepper passes physical, trade complete

March 15, 2006
MIAMI (Ticker) - Daunte Culpepper's ticket back to Florida has been stamped.

The Miami Dolphins acquired the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback from the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday for a second-round pick in 2006.

The deal was officially announced by the Dolphins on Wednesday after Culpepper passed a physical. That was not considered to be a formality after Culpepper tore the ACL, MCL and PCL in his right knee in an October 30 game at Carolina.

The deal was confirmed on Tuesday by the Vikings, who traded their star quarterback a year after parting with perennial Pro Bowl wide receiver Randy Moss.

The Dolphins were interested in both Culpepper and Drew Brees, who is coming off shoulder surgery and signed with New Orleans, to replace quarterback Gus Frerotte. Miami waived Frerotte on Tuesday night.

Culpepper, 29, topped 10,000 passing yards in his college career at Central Florida and finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting in 1998.

One of five quarterbacks selected in the first round of the 1999 draft, Culpepper became the Vikings' starter in 2000 and developed into one of the NFL's best quarterbacks.

However, last season Culpepper threw for just six touchdowns with 12 interceptions in seven games before suffering the injury.

Culpepper's image also took a hit after he allegedly was one of 17 team members among 90 passengers on two cruise boats in Lake Minnetonka on October 6 that turned into a wild sex party.

His value to the Vikings on the field diminished when veteran quarterback Brad Johnson led the Vikings to a 7-2 record after replacing Culpepper.

After signing a 10-year, $102 million contract in May 2003, Culpepper rewarded the Vikings with a monster campaign in 2004, completing 69 percent (379-of-548) of his passes for 4,717 yards and 39 touchdowns with 11 interceptions en route to garnering Pro Bowl honors for the third time.

I'm happy about this.  I was hesitant about Daunte, but after reading about the organization's uncertainty with Brees, Culpepper seems to have been the next best thing.  Welcome to the team!

As long as he can hit Chambers with the deep ball, I'll be happy.

People point to all the usual suspects when they talk about why Daunte was good when he was good and why he sucked when he sucked. No Moss, No Linehan, sub-par RBs... I really think it had a lot more to do with his offensive line. When they were at full health and daunte had time to stand in the pocket and throw, he was fine. When his line started getting injured and Daunte started getting popped a lot, his decision-making went south on him and the turnovers came in bunches. I think if Houck continues to build this O-line into a top unit, Daunte should perform a lot more like the "good Daunte" than the "sucky Daunte."

more comments from the peanut gallery.. I just wonder what will happen when the dolphins continue to improve, and your donkos continue to choke?  Will the fairweather bronco change colors?  I freely admit I'll pull for anyone who beats the patriots or broncos for that matter(mainly because anytime your team loses, especially in embarassing fashion, it always puts a smile on my face.

There's a big difference between yesterday and today.  Yesterday, we had the choice between Brees and Culpepper...now we now.  If he failed this physical, we'd be in bad shape.  ...so even those who would have rather had Brees wanted to see Culpepper in at this point.

I stand by the fact that, if both were healthy, that Brees is a better fit for us.  Maybe the Dolphins didn't like Brees' chances at a full recovery.

That's an excellent summary of the events of the last 2 days in the mind of Dolphin fan.

i'm not really so sure about that.  our offense was built FOR culpepper.  he thrived in it.  the basis of our offense is an offense that runs the ball to set up the pass.  we're not a pass-first offense like Indy.  however, when we DO pass, our offense is designed to stretch the field and emphasize the deep balls.  this is evident in the way the passing system worked in minny, and also in the fact that we led the league in deep pass attempts last year.  Gus had some of his best throws in our deep game, and brees just doesnt have the arm strentgh to heave it as our system requies.  add his shoulder injury to that and its a no-brainer why we took culpepper.  we could tailor the system to fit brees, but then it would limit the potential explosive home run type of play that we actually saw a little bit last year (for the first time since marino, and that was with GUS!!)

add a some dolphins fans, and your statement would correct, its just like the ricky williams issue, some are like brian.... ok a few .... ok maybe 2 or 3 are like brian with their hatred of ricky williams, and most were willing to accept him back.. Same with Daunte, some will like him some will hate him, its all about preference I guess, I'm just glad that the position will finally have a noticable upgrade, and a potential threat, which will allow Ronnie brown some breathing room.

Well I am glad he passed his Physical and we now have our QB. I was not overly thrilled with this at first but I do like the fact we have a good QB on this team. Now I hope he can get healthy and get out there on that field and continue to lead us into the right direction.

Welcome to Miami Daunte!!!!!

WOW.  Nick Saban - you're a GENIUS.  You knew last year that Culpepper would eventually be your starting QB, so you went ahead and designed the offense to fit Culpepper when he arrived this season!!  NO wonder Gus played so bad - the offense wasn't designed for him!!!!

::)

This might be hard to grasp, Joe - but Miami is basically running Minnesota's old offensive scheme.  Has more to do with, oh...I don't know...the Vikings old OCord running the schemes last year than Nick picking up his Magic 8 Ball and saying "will Culpepper be our QB in '06?"

Eye roll indeed.

Babies?  The only people that seem to be doing all the crying around here is you and your buddy from Brokeback Mountain, Denver_Bronco.  Why don't you girls go play in the anti-fins forum where you belong?  Play nice!
