Title: Is Culpepper going to be the week 1 starter? If not, who?
Post by: jtex316 on March 19, 2006, 02:18:09 pm
So who is going to start week 1 for the Dolphins?  Will Daunte be ready to go by that time?

One of the plusses over Brees was that Daunte was supposed to be ready to play faster than Drew.  I have a feeling that he'll be ready.  If not, we have Cleo Lemon on our roster, but my gut feeling is that this front office will look for a veteran QB to play backup, in case we need a spot starter.

I have no idea who it'll be though -- probably some washed out bum or a former high pick that didn't pan out.

Where'd you hear that? I've heard the exact opposite several times. I saw a quote at one point where Daunte's doctor said something along the lines of him almost certainly not being ready by September.

Since we're "stuck" with Culpepper, I'm hoping he'll be ready - the earlier the better, of course - but from what I've read, it appears unlikely that he'll be our quarterback come week 1.

We don't take re-tread QB's, especially those who played for the stinkin, lousy Jets.

...and could still rack up 4 TD's a game instead of the turds we've had for the past 7 years.   ;)

Just hearsay and other people's posts mostly...I'll look around for a link.

Drew Brees himself said he may have to sit out and not play this entire season.

Didn't he and his doctor say that he'd be throwing by minicamps and 100% by September? Did he present that as a worst-case scenario when pressed by a journalist or is this what he feels is probably? Considering the plethora of quotes expressing optimism, I expect the former is the case.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was Tommy Maddox that became our backup.  Either him or Harrington.

He was also shopping himself at that time. Look at how badly Pennington recovered. A torn labrum is a serious throwing injury.

Yeah, but there's a HUGE difference between a completely torn labrum and a small tear. My understanding was Pennington's was torn whereas Brees' just had a small tear. I don't know how long either would take to heal, but if you compare it to how long long players are out if the damage is to, say, their ACL, it's a difference between 4-8 weeks and 8-12 months.

Culpepper claims he will be ready before September.  I hope he can at least practice during the off-season and then get a few reps in pre-season.  he can jog already, so they could let him practice with no one allowed to touch him.

Maddox looks like the backup based on who is left.  Not my favorite player, but not many guys are left.  Plus, Maddox was successful under Mularkey, so it's not a bad idea IMO.
