Title: I can't believe this - Larry Allen is a FA
Post by: jtex316 on March 22, 2006, 09:13:23 am
Larry Allen, quite possibly the BEST Offensive Lineman EVER, was simply outright CUT by the Cowboys.

ANY team should immediately pick him up.  Age doesn't matter - The Houston / Cleveland "Matthews" Brothers played forever and great - Larry Allen needs to be signed immediately.

That guy was known for knocking defensive linemen into the middle of next week.  The Dolphins should sign this guy immediately.

According to you, the Dolphins should sign every free agent immediately. ::)

If you're an NFL Team, you shouldn't be.

Larry allen is a shell of his former self. Allen the last 2- 3 has been getting by on reputation alone. His play hasnt macthed the massive salary. He's no longer the dominating force he once was. He maybe a stop gap for a contending team, but if you're looking for the kick ass larry allen you saw 5-6 years ago, that guy has long left the building.

I think you or someone else said the same thing last season as well.

Yes he will...and by week 3, that team will be disappointed in what they got. Did anyone other than GoCowboys and I actually watch any Dallas games last year? Larry has lost more than a step...he's lost several.

I wanted us to go for Allen last year (2004 season) because we had absolutely nothing on the OL & wanted Wanny to stop digging through the bargain bin. But now, I don't think we need to take a risk on an old, fat, expensive & beat-up tackle who has lost a few steps.

Just curious, GoCowboys...do you ever read some of your own posts like the one above and think "man, I really have some issues to deal with...maybe I should seek clinical assistance?"

I haven't seen any published reports on the deal's particulars, other than it being a two year deal and contingent on Larry passing his physical. No worries...it isn't like we broke the bank for him, and he'll at least add some more meat for the line. This isn't desperation, this is the 49ers knowing that they are looking at other positions with their first 2-3 picks in the draft (DB/DE/TE), so won't likely get an immediate starter from that source. Larry Allen, while significantly diminished from his all-world days, adds a vet who can still play, and it allows the 49ers to slide Baas from guard to center if Newberry doesn't recover from his hyperextended vagina. From the perspective of a team in complete rebuilding mode, any upgrade to the line, no matter how long in the tooth, is welcome.

While Allen wasn't on the top of my FA wish list, it could have been a lot worse...at least we didn't bring T.O. back.  ;)
