Title: Saban on Ricky
Post by: Brian Fein on March 29, 2006, 10:41:52 am
I caught this on the news last night.  They were interviewing Nick Saban, and asked him about the Ricky Williams situation.  His response...

"We have to make sure we have a capable backup at that position..."

umm, what?

I thought Ricky WAS the "capable backup?"

Am I reading too much into this?  Or did Coach let one slip?

Somebody capable of playing possibly ? Cause we know Ricky's career is over...

No we don't........ that is why the Dolphins insisted on getting a hearing for Ricky's appeal BEFORE the draft, so they'll know if they have to go after a RB.

I got $20 that says he misses his own appeal.

I'll put a bet on that...... or better yet, let's make it a poop bet.

I'll take a piece of that.

Is there a chance that the Phins try to recoup the 8 mil if he is suspended ? If not, then he doesn't show.

No one knows what is going to happen at his appeal.  Saban is taking the necessary steps possible in case it fails.. Would have been lovely if Wannstedt would have done the same thing...

Miami has zero chance of recouping that 8 million now.  He came back & played last year & played very well.

All that is in the past.

But i thought he had to play out his entire contract if i'm not mistaken

Basically the judgment was that the original contract he signed was null and void, and he has to pay all the money he earned back to the Dolphins, regardless of what happens next.  However, if he plays well, the Dolphins may forget about the judgment.  If he is suspended for a year, the Dolphins may enforce that judgment, but then Ricky would file for bankruptcy and become a free agent after the year is over.

I personally think he is going to win this appeal.  His attorney is an expert in this field and we know it's not weed or steroids if we believe the reports.  If it was weed, I'd have already written him off.

Regardless, Miami isn't going to live or die based on what happens to Ricky.  Wanny is no longer here.  Sammy Morris is a capable backup and there is always the draft if Ricky doesn't come back.  I doubt they go after the $8mil because that seemed to be more about him retiring than getting in trouble.  If he is suspended, he is still employed by the Dolphins.
