Title: Report: Culpepper Out for Year
Post by: EDGECRUSHER on April 12, 2006, 02:35:08 pm
ProFootballTalk.com hears QB Daunte Culpepper may miss most of 2006.
Rehabbing from knee surgery after tearing his ACL, PCL, and MCL last season, Culpepper initially felt he'd be ready for the start of the upcoming campaign. However, there have been recent reports he won't be able to play at all this year. The Dolphins have pursued Joey Harrington and Tommy Maddox as insurance policies and currently have only Cleo Lemon and Brock Berlin, who's in NFL Europe, on the active roster. Apr. 12 - 12:25 pm et
Source: ProFootballTalk.com

This would tank our season completely. The only bright spot would be having another year for the rookies to develop and we were get a better draft pick.

Edge, thanks for the post, but as others have said, PFT always takes every report one step further (and often blatantly makes stuff up just to drum up traffic).

This is the same site that reported that the Dolphins were changing their team logo to match that of the stadium.

::)

Culpepper mentioned yesterday that he may not be ready for week 1, but no where reputable has it mentioned that he's "out for the season" (which hasn't even started yet, by the way)

I've said this all along and I've seen both Culpepper and his agent quoted as saying as much. Leading up to the trade, though, the rhetoric coming out of the Culpepper camp was remarkably more upbeat (as it has been since then).

FWIW, though I have my doubts that Culpepper will be ready for week 1, I now think he's going to be fine this season. The reason for my flip-flop (and the sole reason) is a comment to that effect from Will Carrol, injury analyst at footballoutsiders.com. I've pimped the site before (not quite as often as Tommy has professed his love of all things Bob Flanders, but more than once) and not without reason. Carrol had the best injury analysis of anything available (that I saw) last season, was repeatedly right on the money (even when all public comments from the team or player in question were way off). That he's won awards as a baseball columnist lends further credibility to his name, although not stricktly relevant.

fyo, I'm curious to know what Will Carrol had to say about Brees... ?
I asked in a private email what he thought of Culpepper and Brees, respectively and he said that "Culpepper should be ok" and that (I'll paraphrase, the original was more strongly worded) "Brees is already throwing and even a team like the Saints had to know he was ok before signing him".

He also added: "Odds on returning to "elite" status? Culpepper - 60%, Brees - 80%".

He hasn't done an offseason injury article, but said (same email) that he might do so around the time of the draft.

I would be very happy if this turns out to be false, but just reading it instills a fear into you that cannot be undone until I see Daunte in a game. Preferably this year.

Saban has said to the media that he was on the field taking snaps and doing drops weeks ago.  If he doesn't play this season, he's the slowest rehabber ever.

I dont buy this one to be honest.

Over here (as im sure you know) the main sport is soccer. And Knee Ligament tears/strains/breaks are more common than they would be in the NFL, given the studded/blades footwear thats worn during play, which plant standing feet in the grass during tackles - therefore all pressure is released on the knee causing more frequent injuries like this.

Now, in Soccer if you're the kind of player that relies on pace (like a striker/winger) your future play will be hampered because of this injury like an ACL/MCL Tear - you will be slightly slower and less agile, and "lose a yard of pace" as they say.

If Culpepper was a Tailback, he could kiss his career Goodbye, but that fact that he relies on his arm more than his pace is a positive. But again, if he never recovers from this injury psychologically, he'll be half the player he was.

Half of Culpepper is still better than any QB we've had since Marino.

I've seen nothing in any other major newspaper that even comes remotely close to validating this article.  From what I've seen, Culpepper could be back by late mid-season worst case scenario.

Title: Re: Report: Culpepper Out for Year

I'm not expcting fireworks out of Culpepper,it's his right knee...He's a right handed QB.This is his plant Leg the one that he pushes off with...when he takes his drop,he pushes off with his right leg.If he doesn't trust that knee, his it will affect his Accuracy, and strength on his throws. From the videos of Daunte throwing (in miami)he's just standing there throwing.

the test for his knee is not walking or running,it's lateral movement.the movements he doesn't use everyday.

For some reason,I always thought it was his left knee, until about 2 weeks ago.Being it's Right knee,I don't see him being the opening day starter. As for out for the season,I'm damn near 99.995% positive he'll play this year. (As it is right now,no reinjures, set backs )

CULPEPPER TO MISS MOST OF THE YEAR?

As speculation continues regarding the question of whether Dolphins quarterback Daunte Culpepper will be ready at the start of the 2006 regular season, we're hearing increased rumblings that Culpepper might not be able to play at all this year.

Right.  It's not the ProFootballValidatedNewsSite.  It's a "RUMOR MILL!"  They heard a rumor and they passed it on.

This is all analagous to liberal complaints about Bush.  Here's a president spending like a drunken sailor and all they can complain about is that Bush "lied" about WMDs.  If being wrong makes someone a liar then almost everyone who posts on any of the prediction threads in here is a liar.

Great info!

Have any All-Pro caliber QBs in the past blown out their knees and come back?

How does Brees' injury compare to Pennington's?  Was Pennington's just a fluke or an indication of what Brees' future may hold?

SCOREBOARD COMPANY LETS CAT OUT OF BAG FOR FINS
POSTED 10:05 p.m. EDT, April 3, 2006; UPDATED 9:23 a.m. EDT, April 4, 2006

A reader advises us that the official web site of Daktronics, a South Dakota scoreboard and video display company, describes as one of its recent projects the installation of two large video displays at the venue, with a scheduled completion date of July 2006. In so doing, Daktronics discloses the new name of the stadium, including its new logo.

The broader question, as we see it, is whether the new Dolphin from the stadium logo eventually will replace the team's traditional cartoon-style, helmet-wearing marine mammal on the side of the player helmets.

Now, you may say "they're just posing the question..." but guess how everyone on this board who read it understood that?  Yeah, its written very sketch-ily, in order to drum up more rumors. ::)

This is the same site that reported that the Dolphins were changing their team logo to match that of the stadium.

As much as I think PFT is crap, they did not report that the Dolphins were changing their logo.  They said something along the lines of:

"Are we to believe that the Dolphins will be updating their logo?"
or
"Who knows if the Dolphins will follow and change their ugly logo?"

...somthing like that.  ...but they most certainly did not make a statement that such was fact.

Please see above - I realize that they posed it as a question.  But go look at how the public read it.  That's a stupid thing to even bring up, and it was written in a way that someone could take it as "oh my god, they're changing their logo to that?"

A news reporting source shouldn't be speculating, rather than reporting the news.  Clearly, PFT isn't a news reporting source.

That's my point.

There's a good German quote that I think fits this report from PFT...

"Nicht die Kinder bloß speist man mit Märchen ab."

Translation..."It isn't just children who are fed fairy tales."

Sooooo, rather than appropriately label the people who misunderstood the comment or can't grasp the concept of rumor mill, we'll just label the comment a lie?

So everytime one of your comments goes over someone's head, you're a liar - or does this only apply to other sites?

There's actually a subtle distiction between "abspeisen" and "feed", in that abspeisen also means to feed (=give) someone something so that they shut up / stop complaining ("fob somebody off with something", although that term is hardly modern US vernacular).

Actually they refer to the site as the "best pro football scoop on the internet". Scoop by definition is an exclusive NEWS story acquired by luck or initiative. So indeed they are referring to themselves as a news source.

Good call on the verbiage, but I think the meaning behind the phrase fits this almost perfectly.

...and for those of us who spent significant time stationed at RAF bases in the UK, the term "fob off" is perfectly clear.   ;)

I don't want to argue with dictionary.com, but I always thought a scoop was the tidbit of information that led to an exclusive story.

Title: Re: Report: Culpepper Out for Year

I always considered a "scoop" to be a tidbit of unique information...but "factual" information. If they had an insider in Daunte's doctor's office during his rehab...THAT would be a scoop. If it's just a guy speculating what could happen, that's not as much a scoop as it is...well, speculation.

Title: Re: Report: Culpepper Out for Year

I believe a scoop is an actual news release; that is, a tidbit of info doesn't become a "scoop" until you release news based on it.

For example, if FOX obtained info today on Ricky's hearing (but didn't release any news about it, for whatever reason), and ESPN obtained the same info tomorrow (and released it the same day), ESPN got the "scoop," even though FOX had the info first.

That is incorrect.  They just recently reported Leinart was about to fire Leigh Steinberg.  Steinberg replied their relationship would be a long one.

Of course it lasted only a few more days.

Lets also remember that you are reading it in a section called "Rumor Mill"

All rumors do not become truths, but that does not mean they were not out there.

As I posted on another site.

Had Miami signed Brees & not traded for Culpepper, a thread like this would be "Glad we did not trade for this broken down bum"

Its only because its Miami.

Thank you RTW.    It seems like some forget is a rumor mill section.  Not the gospel section.

The reason their is speculation out there is because prior to the trade Culpepper said he would be ready.  Now he backed off that comment.

The media being the media runs with things & are not wondering if his injury is not healing right.  Something Miami would not want out until they have found a QB that can play this season.

No, one would not say they are just posing a question.  They are.

No where do they say the Phins will be changing their logo to that one & if anyone read it that way, then a class in Reading Comprehension 101 is something to check into.

They were simply making fun of the Phins cartoonish helmet logo.

No they are not a ESPN.  That is why they have a rumor mill section.
