WOW!! Gary Kubiak...you're an idiot. No way you couldn't have traded that pick, moved down a couple of slots, STILL gotten Mario, and added many more good picks. Gotta go update the mock...Houston, you suck! Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: jtex316 on April 28, 2006, 08:49:47 pm HOLY FOCKING SHIT.
This is unbelievable. Reggie Bush was the #1 pick, he was the lock of all locks. And now he's not the #1 pick overall. Someone somewhere F'ed up, Big Time. Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: DearbornDolfan on April 28, 2006, 09:48:26 pm Quote I guarantee you people are in war rooms right now trying to redo the draft projections and update their boards. I don't think much will change....the first few picks will be the same, just in a different order. I don't see how anything changes for the Fins especially, unless there start to be a lot of trades. Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: JVides on April 28, 2006, 10:02:00 pm Not to be Mr. Skeptic, but are the Texans taking Mario Williams like Miami took Braylon Edwards last year?
Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: JVides on April 28, 2006, 10:05:00 pm Oh, wow...apparently not...Geez...that was...unexpected...
Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: jtex316 on April 28, 2006, 10:21:49 pm This is the craziest Friday before the draft ever.
If Reggie Bush is ever ANY good at all, this move will be forever 2nd guessed until the end of time. Also, I think the New York Jets have just been opened a door of possibilities. They should probably consider pulling a Ricky Williams draft move by trading everyone for 1 pick, at all costs. They are the one team that needs a new superstar the worst of them all - worse the the Saints, who just signed Drew Brees, and worse then the Raiders, who have Randy Moss. Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on April 28, 2006, 10:31:03 pm Major, major shocker!!! If the Texans had agreed to terms with someone like D'Brick, who would fill a huge need for them, I wouldn't have been as surprised, but Mario Williams??? This pick doesn't make any sense!!!
Here's to hoping Mario Williams is a big-time bust and Reggie Bush is a pro-bowler. If that is the case, Kubiak's career as a head coach will be forever marked by this. Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: Frimp on April 28, 2006, 10:45:48 pm Who has the number 2 pick?
Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: gocowboys31 on April 28, 2006, 10:48:32 pm I'm speechless. The texans are a joke. All i can say is welcome to new york Mr. Bush. The jets will certainly move up to the number 2 position. They have plenty of ammunition. I know this must be the dolphins worst nightmare.
Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: Frimp on April 28, 2006, 10:50:49 pm Someone who knows more about this than I do, please switch it around. What do you think will happen?
1 1 Houston 2 2 New Orleans 3 3 Tennessee 4 4 N.Y. Jets 5 5 Green Bay 6 6 San Francisco 7 7 Oakland 8 8 Buffalo 9 9 Detroit 10 10 Arizona 11 11 St. Louis 12 12 Cleveland 13 13 Baltimore 14 14 Philadelphia 15 15 Denver (from Atlanta) 16 16 Miami 17 17 Minnesota 18 18 Dallas 19 19 San Diego 20 20 Kansas City 21 21 New England 22 22 San Francisco (from Washington through Denver) 23 23 Tampa Bay 24 24 Cincinnati 25 25 N.Y. Â
Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: Phishfan on April 29, 2006, 09:41:04 am I can understand the move down comments, but consider this. To move down, someone has to be willing to move up. The #1 spot is expensive, I doubt they had too many serious suitors.
Also think about this, Houston plays in the same division as the Colts. They are not going to outgun the Colts, so in order to be competitive in the division (the first step at making playoff runs) you had better try to stop the Colts. Taking defense makes a lot of sense if you think about it that way. Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on April 29, 2006, 10:00:26 am The one good thing is he is already signed. Because the top five picks traditionally wait for the #1 pick to sign, there will be fewer holdouts this season.
Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: BJL on April 29, 2006, 10:33:10 am I don't think anyone was going to trade up, other than teams past the top 10. We'll have to see in a few years if this is a bonehead pick. I don't know if it is though. The Texans already have Davis, who they gave an extension to. If They hadn't given Davis the extension, it may have been a different story. Let's say the traded Davis... They would have a good hit on their cap, and then pay Bush. I'm just saying, the pick make sense. Besides, running backs have been disposable, and don't have the lifespan in the NFL that linemen on the offensive and defensive side do.

Taking defense makes a lot of sense if you think about it that way. That theory makes sense - but this is Reggie Bush we're talking about here. Almost every scout says he is a gamebreaker, transcendent of all positions, & the type of offensive weapon that only comes around once a generation. He was as surefire as you could get. Mario Williams, as great as he is, is not that kind of player. Kubiak made the reach of all reaches & already is on the hot seat before he ever hit the sideline. Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: VidKid on April 29, 2006, 11:49:14 am uh-oh Dolphins fans, looks like Jets are on the phone right now with the Saints...

Taking defense makes a lot of sense if you think about it that way. I can dig the cheese on your burgers there, Phishmeister, but when you say that moving up is expensive, I contend that it is only as expensive as the Texans make it. The expensive tag is based on that draft slot value guide, and while it is used heavily by NFL personnel guys to assess trades, it isn't a bylaw that needs to be followed. You cannot tell me that if Houston had told #3 Tennessee or #4 New York that the cost to move up to #1 wasn't "all that," but merely an extra 2nd/3rd this year or 2nd this year and 2nd next year...one of those two teams would have moved on that deal so fast they'd hyperextend their trigger finger. I think Mario is an excellent player for Houston to bring in for their division...no argument at all. I just think they could have gotten Mario plus a couple more young talented rookies to fill other need areas. Last time I checked, Houston wasn't "one star pass rusher" away from contending for a title. Just my opinion anyway... Title: Re: Mario Williams #1 Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on April 29, 2006, 06:08:15 pm This would've looked like the coup of the year, had Houston taken LenDale White with the first pick of the second round. As it is, they seem to want to shore up on defense. When Carr gets sacked 77 times again in 2006, Kubiak's gonna be kicking himself.
