Title: 2006 Miami Dolphins Draft Review
Post by: DolFan619 on April 30, 2006, 06:03:30 pm
This was the second draft of the "Nick Saban Era."  This year the picks were more scarce than last year.  Of course the arguement can be made that these traded draft picks were used more wisely than those in years past.  Of course the second rounder going to Minnesota for Daunte Culpepper, our fifth rounder being used for DT Manuel Wright, and our 6th rounder was dealt during the "Lemon for a Lemon" trade to San Diego.

This year, we only had a 1st, 3rd, 4th, and three 7th's.  Here's how the picks broke down.

1st Round- DB/S Jason Allen, Tennessee

3rd Round- WR Derek Hagan, Arizona State

4th Round- OT Joe Toledo, Washington

7th Round- DT Fred Evans, Texas State

7th Round- DT Rodrique Wright, Texas

7th Round- WR Devin Aromashodu, Auburn

Three picks on offense, and three picks on defense.  I'd say that's a fair balance between both sides of the ball.  After waiting ALL these months for it come, the Draft is over.  So, what did you think?  Good Draft?  Okay Draft?  Bad Draft?  What was the best pick in the Dolphins draft?  Where did the Dolphins get the most value?  Was there a pick you didn't agree with?  Finally, we all know that will never know how these picks truly turn out until three to four seasons from now.  However, if you had to give a grade for this Draft, what would it be and why?

There were some bigger names out there that Saban could've used in the early going, but he found some gems in the later rounds in Wright and Toledo.  He did fill some needs, but not all of them.

That said, there are some key guys out there that played well in college but did not get drafted.  If signed as undrafted free agents, they could make good contributions to this team.  Here's four right off the top of my head:

Freddie Roach       LB/Alabama (thanks Dolfan619)
Cameron Vaughn  LB/LSU
Marcus Vick           QB/Virginia Tech
Mike Kudla            DE/Ohio St

OVERALL GRADE:  B

I have to go with a C.  They got only 2 players that will contribute much this year & Hagan will most likely be a 3rd or 4th Wr this year.

The rest are unknowns or underachievers that will need time to develop.

As with any draft class.  Most likely we will not know about them until 3 to 4 years down the road.

Saban seems to know how to get unkowns or underachievers to unlock that potential, so i would have to give the draft a B/B+.

The drafting of Joe Toledo takes a C grade and bumpis it up to a B. If Allen never has another problem with his sugically repaired hip, and comes out and plays like a first round pick, then I'd even consider bumping it up to an A-.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to actually list all the picks?

1st Round- DB/S Jason Allen, Tennessee
2nd Round - QB Daunte Culpepper
3rd Round- WR Derek Hagan, Arizona State
4th Round- OT Joe Toledo, Washington
5th Round - DT Manuel Wright
6th Round - QB Cleo Lemon
7th Round- DT Fred Evans, Texas State
7th Round- DT Rodrique Wright, Texas
7th Round- WR Devin Aromashodu, Auburn

Marcus Vick           QB/Virginia Tech

No thank you. At least mention a QB worth signing, like Drew Olson. (I am so surprised he didn't get drafted). A more likely guy that we will sign would be Darrell Hackney from Alabama-Birmingham, since Saban was pretty high on him during the Senior Bowl

I don't get this Marcus Vick thing.

#1 - He's not as good as his brother.
#2 - His brother is a big dissapointment.  Considering #1, he's not worth it.
#3 - He's a headcase.  He's nothing but trouble.
#4 - He sucked in college, too.

Why on Earth would you possibly want him on your team.  Even if he shapes up, he's still a crappy football player!

Good point!!!  The picks traded have to be considered part of our draft.

You don't know if he'll turn out to be a crappy football player.  That's why you have very little to loose by signing him as an undrafted free agent.  I watched the final pick, where they give out the Mr. Irrelevant award, and everyone was chanting his name.

Oh yes you do.  The fact that he sucks, and has the worst attitude ever, and that's he's a stupid punk, tells us so.

Plus, I agree, the Mike Vick expereinece is over, and it wasn't all that great to begin with.  What is Marcus somehow magically better then him?  (because if he does sign with a team, the Vick vs. Vick comparisons will never end).

There's a lot of talent out there in the undrafted free agent market right now, but Marcus Vick isn't one of them.  This kid is a total scumbag, he's had every chance in the world to better himself and he's flushed every oppurtunity down the toilet.  He doesn't deserve another chance, Marcus better get used to saying "Would you like fries with that?"  Because that's all this idiot is qualified to do.

The talent that you should focus on out there are guys like CB Anwar Phillips of Penn State, and QB Drew Olsen of UCLA.

I didn't realize that Phillips didn't get drafted. He'd be a good depth pickup. I also mentioned Olsen earlier, so I'm glad that other people are pointing him out. Although by now, he may have signed somewhere.

Miami doesn't need him so much...but I would love to see the Niners grab Olsen for QB depth. Keep him in Cali, where he belongs. ;)

I would just like to go on record as saying this was the best draft I've ever seen.  All reviews of all our guys I've seen have had one thing in common.  And that is that they all have a drive to succeed.  Furthermore, most of them have good stats, and any sec fan will tell you that aromachadu is a gamer just like the tenn kid.  And Mr. Toledo's dad is like a secret service agent or something.  He's like captain america, and the only problem we'll have with him is if he decides he wants to go to war against terrorists.  Saban truly understands that there's more than raw talent that makes a good player.  He didn't draft talented kids, he drafted men.  He needs guys that will do what they're told, and that, my friends, is exactly what we got out of this draft.  so totally stoked here.  We are going to have a ridiculous team this year.

Too late. The Ravens signed him.

No worries...we still have that stud Alex Smith, so we're covered.  ::)

Sign Marcus Vick, cover up all the stupid things he does and says, rave about him to the media everyday, say he is a future star - and then trade him for a 2007 draft pick.
