You needed it to walk over the indiscructable chomping plants. Also, you could stomp on spinys and other things you couldn't normally kill by jumping on top of. Yeah, he had a Frog suit, as well as a Tannoki suit which had all the abilities of the raccoon but you could turn into a stone statue and be invincible. There was also a Hammer Brother suit where you could throw hammers. I've been playing that a ton (In between Tetris runs). I can't believe how crappy you get after 20 years of not playing that game.
