Title: Welker gone?
Post by: Philly Fin Fan on May 16, 2006, 10:41:50 pm
I have a feeling Welker may be an odd man out this year, and may not make the team. I know a lot of people on here think he is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but he has been average at best as a return man, with a few exceptional plays.

My thoughts for this?
1- Saban went out and signed Kelly Campbell, who is a return man, and the rumor is that Vick may be used as a WR/ return man.

2- We drafted two WR's who have more upside as the 3rd WR than Welker would.

I can't see this happening.  Welker has been one of our better return guys, and he's just been clutch.  He's a "Saban guy", who plays above his means.  I would not be happy with that decision at all.

This is going to be interesting come training camp.

Welker >>>>>> Vick.

Just in case that is what Nick Saban was thinking about when signing that bum.

man i was thinking the EXACT same thing today....

i hope they keep him for obvious reasons.  however, if there's more potential in the rookies and we need the space, then dump him.  we certainly have the coaching staff to properly develop their talent and get the most out of them.

I love Wes Welker.  I hope he doesn't get cut.  The guy plays his heart out, and has been absolutely clutch on offense.  How many huge 3rd-and-longs did he end up converting in clutch situations last season?  This would be a big mistake.

I don't think you give up performance for potential.  Welker is a play maker.  If you're going to cut a guy for someone with potential, pick one of the 20 other bums we have that underachieve.  It'd be a shame to lose Welker, at least now.

but its the position.  Teams typically don't carry more than 5 WR's.

If Chambers and Booker are locks, and we just drafted 2 more guys, that leaves Welker and Vick and any other FA's.  Is David Boston still on the roster?

I don't think the 7th round guy from Auburn will make the team, though.  Maybe the practice squad...

I have to admit,I really like Welker,but....

He isn't the fastest guy on the team...
He does put the ball on the ground occasionally....

I'm going to compare him to Travis Minor....
Minor isn't that good of a running back, has pretty good speed, can do returns and will play special teams...

Prior to the start of last season we had a plethora of Rb's on the roster, and we cut Lamar Gordon.Somehow Travis Minor made the team...and even yet we re-signed back this year....

I think Wes Welker will make the team,Vick will probably be on the Practice Squad.Wes Might not have all the return duties, but I think he'll be on the active roster, atleast playing on special teams.

I agree,  on all points.  Getting rid of him would be flat out stupid.

The guy plays his heart out,

So did Jay Fiedler.

I don't expect Welker to be cut. I think we can assume 5 WR on the roster. Chambers, Booker, Hagan, Welker, the fifth spot is up for grabs. Welker has the edge because of experience.

i dont think we'll keep vick on the practce squad simply because he could still be signed away by another team....i could see him being allocated to NFL Europe, or making the final roster as a return specialist, because of his shiftiness and speed

So did Jay Fiedler.
Are you really going to compare Wes Welker to Jay Fiedler?

::)

Haha that'd be so unfair to the guy!

Given the (very low) level of expectation on Welker's shoulders at the beginning of last year, i'd say he had a pretty good season?

Even if it was only, whatever, 10 Plays that he made, but it was 10 plays more than some of the other bums on our Roster at that time. (Reggie Howard) ;D

I think Welker sticks around as the third receiver while Hagan, Aromashadou, and Vick learn the trade.

This question is a year early, in my opinion.

If Vick makes the team as a receiver, and Welker gets cut, I am going to lose it.

No one has mentioned Campbell in this equation. Ithink he is the guy who will take over the return duties.

I don't see Wes going anywhere.  This guy was great in the slot and third down situations.  Here are the receivers Miami has on the roster right now.

- Chris Chambers

- Marty Booker

- Derek Hagan

- Devin Aromashodu

- Kelly Campbell

- Wes Welker

- Fred Gibson

- Chris Davis

- Eric Kimble

- Jason Willis

- Frank Murphy

- Cliff Russell

- Marcus Vick

Look, aside from the main guys, (Chambers, Booker, Campbell, and Hagan) a lot of these guys aren't really serious challengers to Wes Welker's spot.  The two guys that could have a good shot to make the team are Devin Aromashodu and Fred Gibson.  The others are practice squad players at best.  Besides, not every player drafted or undrafted free agent makes the team.  So Marcus Vick may be out the door after training camp is over with.  Point is, as productive as Welker was, and factoring the other things he can do besides fielding punts, kickoffs, and receiving.  He is simply too valuable of a commodity to let go of.  The Chargers have probably been kicking themselves in the ass for letting him get away ever since they cut him two seasons ago.

Welker can also kick the ball, if need be. Always good to have guys with multiple skills on your team, even if its a skill you hope you won't need.

And of course, following on from the comparison to Fiedler, Welker can probably throw the ball better too ;)

In an interview on the team website last week, he said he couldn't throw ;-)

Letting Welker go would be foolish.  Saban is no fool.

No, but he did let Heath Evans go for apparently no reason...

I was not happy about the Heath Evans deal because he is Auburn guy, but the truth is he didn't fit the system and wasn't doing the well.  Barnes did a nice job in his place and now we have an Auburn stud in Fred Beasley.  That's a huge upgrade.  Auburn man Ronnie is going to rock this year behind Auburn man Jeno James unless it's a pass play to Auburn man Devin  :D

Trouble I have with Saban is that he seems to be smitten by players from the SEC that he doesn't seem to realize that there are a lot of talented guys out there from the other conferences.  I had no idea who Jason Allen was when Saban drafted him, and I won't believe it until I see it when people say Allen's gonna be a good DB.  I would've preferred Saban to take Cromartie or Justice.
