Title: Announcers in the hall of fame? Post by: Frimp on May 18, 2006, 01:52:26 pm Are there any?
Should there be? If they don't do it now, I think they should go. Howard Cosell, John Madden, Pat Summerall, Al Michaels, and Chris Berman, just to name a few. Title: Re: Announcers in the hall of fame? Post by: Brian Fein on May 18, 2006, 01:57:02 pm I think there are. I'm fairly certain I remember seeing a bust of Howard Cosell in Canton.
Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong. Title: Re: Announcers in the hall of fame? Post by: Dave Gray on May 18, 2006, 04:11:01 pm I don't think it would hurt to put announcers in, but I don't think they should, because they aren't really property of the NFL. They are part of NBC, CBS, ESPN, etc.....I don't really care if they do, but they should put a punter or kicker in before that.

They should consider Commissioners and GM's before announcers. Title: Re: Announcers in the hall of fame? Title: Re: Announcers in the hall of fame? Post by: Sunstroke on May 19, 2006, 11:05:23 am The NFL Hall of Fame doesn't actually enshrine broadcasters, per se, but since '89, they've annually given the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award to broadcasters who have had a "hall-worthy" broadcasting career. I couldn't find this year's nominees on the HoF website, but past winners of the Rozelle award are:
1989 - Bill McPhail 1990 - Lindsey Nelson 1991 - Ed Sabol 1992 - Chris Schenkel 1993 - Curt Gowdy 1994 - Pat Summerall 1995 - Frank Gifford 1996 - Jack Buck 1997 - Charlie Jones 1998 - Val Pinchbeck 1999 - Dick Enberg 2000 - Ray Scott 2001 - Roone Arledge 2002 - John Madden 2003 - Don Criqui 2004 - Van Miller 2005 - Myron Cope Title: Re: Announcers in the hall of fame? Title: Re: Announcers in the hall of fame? Post by: jtex316 on May 19, 2006, 11:57:44 am Chris Shenkel is awesome. RIP.
Title: Re: Announcers in the hall of fame? Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on May 19, 2006, 08:38:10 pm This is simply an amazing feat. The fact that no announcers are in the Hall of Fame is truly a remarkable occurrence.
Title: Re: Announcers in the hall of fame? Post by: Phishfan on May 22, 2006, 10:12:34 am Why is it remarkable? How can you quantify their performance? I know you can come up with some calculation of what games they have done, but I think adding announcers would diminish the hall a bit.

There is no success meter for announcers. ...just because they are on TV doesn't make them good. Look at Theisman. He just keeps moving up in the ranks, and he's the worst in the business. And like I said...announcers don't really have anything to do with the league...they are chosen by the networks. Are you going to start putting radio guys in there next? Title: Re: Announcers in the hall of fame? Post by: Phishfan on May 22, 2006, 12:04:30 pm  Are you going to start putting radio guys in there next? I had assumed we were including them in the discussion as well. Title: Re: Announcers in the hall of fame? Post by: Sunstroke on May 22, 2006, 12:29:29 pm I don't think that the sports hall of fames are the place for broadcasters, and this is from someone whose father was a radio/TV sportscaster for close to 30 years. I think that radio and TV organizations give out enough awards for outstanding service (not just the Rozelle award that's handed out by the NFL HoF). That said, if the major sports HoF's DID have a special exhibit for the legendary broadcasters within their sport, I'd have no problem with that either. |
