Dolphins to pick up new offensive guard

BY BARRY JACKSON

The Dolphins on Wednesday agreed to terms with veteran starting guard Bennie Anderson, according to a source.

Anderson has started 70 of 79 games in his pro career and has a good chance to start at right guard for the Dolphins. The position opened when the Dolphins recently decided to move Rex Hadnot to center. Seth McKinney, who had been the starting center, will compete with Anderson for the starting right guard spot.

Green Bay was among several other teams that pursued Anderson, who agreed to a two-year contract after visiting Dolphins headquarters on Tuesday.

Anderson, 6-5 and 345 pounds, was cut last Friday by Buffalo, which is changing its blocking schemes. Anderson, known as a strong run-blocker, started 15 games last season for the Bills, who were coached by Mike Mularkey, now the Dolphins' offensive coordinator.

Anderson, who attended Tennessee State, was selected in the fourth round of the 2001 draft by San Francisco, and spent the first four years of his career with Baltimore before moving on to Buffalo last season.

I love it!  I think this guy is a lock to start at guard.  Now all we need is for Hadnot to win that C job and we will have ourselves a winner!

I doubt they'll cut Mckinney, but they'll keep him as a back up at center and both guard slots. He has a good attitude if limited talent, and he can fill a role as a servicable backup who knows the system. I expect to see old sweaty on the roster this year.

The nice thing is seeing how Saban is really working to improve the overall talent level on the roster...glad to see him bringing in solid new players like Bennie Anderson.

Yeah,He might make it through the summer...He didn't get much love on the open market, since we resigned him March 24th...I Don't care if He rides the Pine,it's one step closer to out the door...He wasn't good at either postition (C/G)

Actually, he played solid, but unspectacular, when filling in for an injured Jaime Nails at left guard in 2002.  I've always thought he would be better suited to play guard.

Now as for Anderson.....excellent, EXCELLENT pickup by Saban and his staff.   This guy is a mauler.

I always thought McKinney was better suited at Guard than at Center.  Granted, he performed admirably last season after an uttelry atrocious 2004 season.  However, admirably gets you only so far in the NFL.  Regardless, McKinney will be with us this season what happens beyond that we really don't know.  I think McKinney's status on this team is going to be determined by how guys like Anthony Alabi and Joe Toledo develop.
