Title: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: ethurst2 on June 23, 2006, 06:55:17 pm The Dolphins are in the AFC Championship Game.
You have a choice between Dan Marino, the Gunslinger... Or Bob Griese, the field general. You've got Mark Clayton and Paul Warfield as your receivers... Larry Csonka and Ricky Williams as your running backs. Which quarterback would you pick to lead your team to the Super Bowl! Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: Dave Gray on June 23, 2006, 10:53:59 pm Marino.
He's the best QB we've ever had. Griese was a great manager, but I'd rather have raw talent. Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: ethurst2 on June 24, 2006, 12:52:26 am Wow Dave! I was expecting you to pick "Griese" as the quarterback that you would start.
The reason why I posted this is because a few years ago, someone asked Mad Dog Mandich who he would pick. He didn't want to answer the question until he was backed into a corner and he picked Griese. His analogy was that Griese was a total offense quarterback while Marino was kind of one-dimensional who loved to throw the ball and disdain run plays. I think there was a slight bias because he played with Bob. I think another factor is Defense. In the two times that the Dolphins appeared in the AFC Championship Game (Jan 85 and Jan 92) I don't think their defense was that good. Griese had the No-Names to cover up for him. Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: raptorsfan29 on June 24, 2006, 01:13:54 am i would pick Griese. Marino choked in the playoffs. Griese was a champion
Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: Dave Gray on June 24, 2006, 01:46:45 am Griese had a complete team. Marino had good receivers, but no running game, and no defense.
Maybe Marino's distain for the run came because Mark Higgs was his stud RB. Marino is arguably the best QB the league has ever seen. Oh...and welcome to the boards, by the way. Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: Frimp on June 24, 2006, 02:30:42 am Marino
Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: Thundergod on June 24, 2006, 07:49:33 am Marino.
Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: Brian Fein on June 24, 2006, 11:01:16 am I think with Ricky (I assume you mean the good Ricky, not the second string, lost a bunch of weight, stoner Ricky) and Zonk in the backfield, it won't matter who the QB is, but I'd have to go with Marino as well.
Its nice that we have QB's good enough to talk about like that. Other than the 49ers, not many other teams have 2 HOF QB's from the recent era to speak of. Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: run_to_win on June 25, 2006, 03:54:24 am The Dolphins are in the AFC Championship Game. What year is it? Is this during the 70's when Shula was still a run-first coach and QBs didn't have as much freedom to check off? If so, I'd take the talent of Marino.  Or is this during the 80's or 90's when Shula was drunk off Marino's talent and the QB was given more freedom to check off? If so, I'd take the patience of Griese. Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: run_to_win on June 25, 2006, 04:03:00 am Maybe Marino's distain for the run came because Mark Higgs was his stud RB. What about this guy (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/HumpBo00.htm)? (<- link) He was healthy enough to catch passes...Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: ethurst2 on June 25, 2006, 12:32:16 pm Guys,
Do you think that Marino sabotaged his own chance to go to more Super Bowls by having a "pass first" mentality? Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: run_to_win on June 25, 2006, 10:05:08 pm Do you think that Marino sabotaged his own chance to go to more Super Bowls by having a "pass first" mentality? Heresy warning! Read at your own risk!Yes, but Shula was fully complicit. Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: jtex316 on June 25, 2006, 11:33:34 pm Unfortunately, Dan Marino was the HS Jock that never grew up.
Don Shula should have stepped in very early and put together a system where Marino didn't throw for 8,000 yards a season. Hell I could brake every passing record in that offense. I don't blame Marino for throwing on damn near every play. Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: DolFan619 on June 25, 2006, 11:34:08 pm   I'd take Marino, no question about it.
Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: Phishfan on June 26, 2006, 08:30:50 am It's tough to blame Marino for a lack of a running game. The line could not run block and there was little talent at RB. The offense was designed as a pass first offense. In that situation you cannot blame a QB for passing.
Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: Denver_Bronco on June 26, 2006, 09:22:52 am I would take Brian Griese. ;D

I would add the lack of a defense as well. Dan put up some pretty good numbers in a lot of losing games. Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: The_Phinatic on June 26, 2006, 12:46:24 pm phinatics.com: It's the Super Bowl and you need a touchdown. Your team is on the 10 yard line with one timeout and one minute to go in the game. Would you take Unitas, Griese, or Marino? Who do you pick and why?
Don Shula: That's just such a tough question because all of them have been great. Unitas invented the 2 minute drill, Griese knew how to get the football into the endzone, and nobody did it better than Dan Marino. So, there's no easy answer to that. THE MAN has spoken :). For me, it would be Marino. With that kind of talent around him he would get his ring. Griese has 2 already :D. Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on June 26, 2006, 01:45:06 pm Marino, No doubt in my mind. He never had a running game period. It's not like he had one and chose not to use it. His offensive line was never built to run block and he never had any worthy RB's or a defense for that matter. You take the 84 team add our defense from a couple of seasons ago and the good Ricky Williams and there was no way Marino does not have a ring. You put Marino in a Cowboys uniform in the early 90's....he has a ring or 4. He needed a complete team and never had it you can not fault Dan for that in my opinion. Marino was a better QB and I would take him in any AFC Championship game over anyone. Just my 2 cents!!!!!
Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: Dave Gray on June 27, 2006, 11:31:46 pm THE MAN has spoken :). The man just dodged the question. What a weiner Shula is. Title: Re: AFC Championship Game--who's your QB? Post by: TEKGOD on June 28, 2006, 02:01:46 am Marino no question. I don't think there is any doubt in anyone's mind that if the Dolphins in his day had half the defensive support Griese had he'd be sporting some rings.
