Dolphins to host Cowboys safety Keith Davis

Free agent safety Keith Davis is set to visit the Dolphins on Monday, and if the Dolphins sign the former Cowboy he'll likely compete for one of the starting safety spots.

Davis, who has started 22 games in his five-year career with the Cowboys, is mostly known for his special teams play, which was often touted by Bill Parcells, the Dolphins vice president of football operations, when he coached the Cowboys.

Last season Davis, who is 5-foot-11, 207 pounds, contributed 18 special team tackles as a flyer despite playing with an injured shoulder.

Davis' goal is to find a team that will give him an opportunity to compete for a starting spot. He's also drawn interest from the Ravens.

If signed, Davis, 29, would compete with safeties Jason Allen, Yeremiah Bell, Courtney Bryan, Tuff Harris, and converted cornerback Travis Daniels for one of the two starting spots when training camp opens.

Last season the Dolphins lost three of its starting safeties to season-ending injuries. Two of those players, Renaldo Hill and Cameron Worrell, will likely miss the start of training camp, if not the season, rehabilitating the ACL injuries that ended their seasons.

In his best season (2005) Davis started 15 games and contributed 66 tackles (47 solo) and broke up three passes. However, this former Sam Houston State standout hasn't registered an interception in his five seasons in the NFL.

Sounds like a good signing to me. Let him compete for safety and if he's an improvement, great. Otherwise, we'll get a solid upgrade on a special teams unit that desperately needs it.
