10 things you probably didn’t know about Jake Long

By Tim Graham | Sunday, April 27, 2008, 12:12 PM

1. Was in intensive care and on a respirator for three days after being involved in a house fire his redshirt freshman year at Michigan. He was at practice three weeks later.

2. His girlfriend, Jackie Laurian, who he met five years ago at Michigan, is an aspiring actress now living in Los Angeles.

3. His arm length (armpit to the end of the fist) is 32 7/8 inches, slightly longer than that of former heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis.

4. Barry Sanders was his favorite player as a kid.

5. He rushed for four touchdowns as a goal-line fullback at Lapeer East High.

6. Shoulder surgery and foot and ankle problems caused him to miss seven games as a Michigan sophomore.

7. His brother, Joe Long, is a 6-foot-6, 280-pound redshirt freshman tackle at Wayne State.

8. English was his best subject and says he could write a mean paper.

9. As a junior at Lapeer East he set school records for shooting percentage in basketball and home runs and RBIs in baseball.

10. Superman is his favorite superhero: “He can fly and he’s strong. What else is there?”

Are book end Long's at tackle in the future for the Fins?

Could be the case, but his kid brother needs to bulk up.  280 lbs is a little light for a tackle.

Exactly what I was thinking. He's probably 17,18, or 19 years old. He'll gain weight.

I'm wondering why the younger brother of a left tackle prodigy like Jake didn't sign with a school a little more prestigious than Wayne State University. Didn't he get any offers from anyone bigger than that?
