They are a major pretender.  Wake me up when they beat a team that doesn't suck.

That being said, looks like they might have something to build on for next year.

When the three "best" teams in the league are the Kansas City Chiefs, the Chicago Bears, and the Charlie Batch-led Pittsburgh Steelers, well...

Like I said in another thread, watch out for KC.  They have a lot of dangerous weapons on offense.  They have a capable QB in Matt Cassel, a major 1-2 punch in Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones, and some lethal wide receivers in Dwayne Bowe and Chris Chambers.

Scott Pioli is one of the best in the business at evaluating talent.  With him heading up the front office, this team will get some serious talent very quickly.  Notice how the Patriots have been on the decline since Pioli left.

They do have an easy schedule, I'll give it that much.  However, so did the 2008 Dolphins.  Mark my words.  KC will make the playoffs this year.

I've been on the KC 'wagon for a couple of weeks now...and Jamaal Charles' 'wagon since last season. The only weak spot on that entire team, imo, is the QB position, and while that is a critical spot to have a weakness, I think the rest of the team is strong enough that KC will still end up winning the AFC West.

I have been on the KC 'wagon since January 13, 2009.  I think they will be a contender for the next decade.

I can't say I'm surprised the Chiefs have turned it around. Their start, maybe, but they were a good team until 2007 and just needed to clean out some crap. Old players, old coaches... With San Diego floundering, they could win the division -- but I think it's a bit early to anoint them division champs; they could just as easily wind up third behind the Chargers and Broncos.

I will also agree that I think it's a bit early to anoint the Chiefs as AFC West division winners (not that it's probably gonna be a superb division this year anyways, though) because a) there's a lot of football to be played and b) they have played at least one subpar team (Browns) and possibly another (Niners...I'll give you that the jury is still out on your boys, 'Stroke  Wink ), and beat the third team on their home opener on Monday Night Football, so it's hard to say with confidence how "for real" this team may or may not be...but I'll also tell ya that I don't think you can rule them out yet.  The one game I really got to watch them (their opener on MNF), they really did impress me.  Again, with the typically slow-starting Chargers, it's hard to gauge for sure, but a road win's a road win in the NFL the next week against Cleveland, and they haven't looked back yet.

I could seriously see this team being the dominant team in the West for some years to come because, as many have already mentioned, Pioli's there and the guy is just a solid talent evaluator, particularly for his team's needs, and ol' Weis and Crennel weren't exactly a shabby combo. as o- and d-coordinators for some team up North a few years ago, huh?  We shall see.....

Matt Cassel is a very capable and smart QB.  Years of playing behind Tom Brady will do that to you.  Pioli would be wise to draft a young QB or two to groom for a little bit under Cassel.
