the latest from David Hyde at the Sun-Sentinel:

http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports/columnists/hyde/blog/2011/10/hyde5_have_dolphins_seen_enoug.html

take it for what it's worth.

I am a Henne backer (dismissed by my son "Dad, he sucks") but you get the feeling this may have been his last game if the shoulder keeps him out for quite some time and possibly the rest of the season.

I don't know what to make of the guy.  He's got several things in a QB you want, he's big, got an arm, can take a hit, etc.  but then he's got other qualities that stick out at ya, can't lead a comeback, checks down too much (at least in the past), has trouble in the RedZone, etc.

now, is he a product of the people around him?  say for example, Brandon Marshall has not come thru him this year (multiple TD drops). Offensive line has been a bad the last couple of years. Doesn't have someone that can stretch the field on a consistent basis.

He's a catch-22.  seems as though he has the abilities to do the job and then falters when it counts.

believe it or not, his QBR rating from ESPN has him 9th in the league at this time. wow!  would have never guessed.

take it for what it's worth.

I have generally always been a Henne backer up until this year. I compare his performance to me going out to fish. When there's nothing going on while fishing, you're about to pack it up and go home, but then you get a bite, you get excite and then wait it out another 20 minutes or so. Henne is like that for me. One game he actually does quite well and then I think I've been vindicated for supporting him and we should stick with him, then he has a lousy game and loses some for us, and I think maybe he has peaked and this is the best he can do.

I don't know if its the pieces, such as bad o-line play, bad drops by the WRs, bad coaching, bad play calling. I would like to see what he would do if he was on the Pats. If he can't win there then...

Does it matter?

I hope he hasn't, but that shouldn't deter us from trying to get the absolute best quarterback possible (same with every position).

Let's say we do draft one of the top prospects next year. I'd like to keep Henne as a backup (and starter initially, despite MikeO's insistence that the best thing for quarterbacks in the NFL today is to be thrown out there immediately). He has experience with the team and the players -- and even if new coaches are brought in, that still counts for a lot.

If you draft a guy in the 1st and/or 2nd round, they should be able to play immediately.

perfect analogy!  I was a Henne backer up until week 2 of this season.  It's clear Miami needs to go in a different direction.  Not just at QB, but a lot of other areas as well.  I wanted Henne to do well, I honestly did, but for whatever reason he just couldn't put it all together.  His contract is up at the end of the year, and it's probably better for both parties for him to try his luck elsewhere.  He'll probably excel on a new team, but aren't we used to things like that happening?

It's real simple.

Most people don't judge a QB on his performance, they judge him on whether or not his team wins.  Henne has not had a lot of success in that category so those people are going to judge him that way regardless of what he does on the field. Those people believe that is the only way to judge a QB. Fair or unfair doesn't really matter, it's reality.

Now if you believe that you should judge the QB based on his performance, then you are most likely going to disagree with those folks who rate him on his teams success, because while Henne certainly isn't anything special, his performance has not been indicitive of the team's success for the most part. He's an average QB performance wise, he's a poor QB success wise.
