New Dolphins coach Joe Philbin has settled on his two biggest hires.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that the Dolphins have agreed to terms with Mike Sherman to become their offensive coordinator and Kevin Coyle to become their defensive coordinator.

Both men were viewed as favorites all along for the respective positions. Sherman taught Phiblin in prep school and the two men worked together in Green Bay. Philbin said he doesn’t plan to call plays in Miami, so Sherman gives him an experienced coach to assist him.

Coyle has been the secondary coach in Cincinnati, spending his last nine years with the Bengals. He knows Philbin personally and reportedly attended his son Michael’s funeral. Coyle has 35 years of experience of coaching, although he has only been a coordinator at the collegiate level before.

Coyle worked in a 4-3 defense in Cincinnati. His hiring could be a sign that the Dolphins defense is in transition after all.

I thought the defensive change was a done deal? Did I misread that? 4-3 as quickly as Philbin was brought on. -EK

Dolphins ran a 4-3 on 52% of the snaps last year. Word is they are switching to a 4-3 next year but it isn't official yet. But bringing in Coyle is a sign of that switch I would say.

Also heard on WQAM the other the day is if you crunch the cap numbers, if the Fins bring in either Flynn or Manning they can't keep Soliai. It's really difficult to make that work cap wise if not impossible really.  So they will have to let him walk. Which then makes sense also going to 4-3 because you can play Starks/Oddrick as your 2 DT's and you don't need a pure nose tackle like Soliai.

This means we can say goodbye to Todd Bowles and Brian Daboll, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Bowels was let go the other day, Wednesday I believe. They were blocking Daboll from talking with other teams. Incase Sherman got the Tampa job, Daboll was option C or D on their list if Philbin couldn't get anyone else to be offensive coordinator. I am sure Daboll will be cut loose ASAP now.

I like that he isn't going to be calling his own plays. Rookie head coaches have way too much on their plate already and I think we've had enough of micro-managers in Miami to last us a good while.

I agree. Plus he and Sherman are very tight and have the same theories and thoughts on offense. So having someone you are so in sync with and on the same page with is very good for a rookie head coach.

Soliai is a FREE AGENT and the Dolphins haven't even tried to get him signed while he played this past season under the franchise tag. He also didn't play particularly well.

Plus he and his agent are pissed they didn't get a long-term deal last year from Ireland. I really don't see him coming back. But ya never know.

Exactly my point.  Anyone connected to Sparano can get the fuck out of Miami.

I agree. We are only keeping 2 coaches as of now. Our D-Line coach Rodgers and our special teams coach Rizzi. But Rizzi has been mentioned for the open Rutgers job. Not on top of their wish list but is on their list nonetheless.
