Sad to hear Garo lost his battle with cancer on Friday.

I meet him once a few years back at a dinner and he was just a sweetheart of a guy and had everyone laughing!

RIP Garo!  My minds eye can still see the flubbed kick/pass attempt.

A loss for the Dolphins.

If you watch the America's game documentary on the 72 Dolphins, one of the players, I think it is Manny Fernandez, says that the team's anger over that play came not because of the blocked kick, not because of the pass, but because he didn't throw his body at Mike Bass when he was going down the sideline

Garo was a genuinely nice man from all accounts and I don't believe I ever heard anyone say anything negative about him.  It's a shame that he was forever known for "that play" because he was a pretty good kicker who had a nice career.  And if I remember my useless trivia correctly, I believe he was the last NFL player to not wear a facemask.  1966, I believe.  I could be wrong though.

I believe you're correct, IIRC Keuch was also pretty angry for him not doing that as well.  I think the Dolphins really wanted to go out with a prefect, unblemished mark and keeping WAS off the board for that game would have been icing on the cake. Would have been sweet to win that SB 17-0 (if Garo had converted) and be 17-0 on the season.

Kickers were nowhere near as accurate in those days as they are today.
