THE ASSCLOWN AWARD

« on: July 26, 2024, 03:49:46 pm »

$214 million. $167 guaranteed to an injury-prone quarterback who has never won a playoff game and is only good because of one specific receiver.

Did you guys know he wasn't even our highest rated quarterback last season?  Mike White was.

Why won't they listen to me at all?

why won't they learn from teams like the Packers and the Broncos?

We are now screwed for the foreseeable future.

So depressing.

Tua does not deserve that kind of money.

Not in any way shape or form.

What about when Tyreek retires?

We all saw how bad he is without Tyreek Hill.

There were other holes we needed to fix.

You're comparing 560 attempts to 6 attempts?  Surely you jest...

Wait till you watch the Packers break the bank for Jordan Love before using them as a teachable example...

It is a four year deal.

They could have had him this year for $23 million.

Franchise him next year for about ~40

Franchise him the following year for less than 50 million

If they then signed him for a $100 million dollar one year deal.  That would still be considerable less expensive for the dolphins than this four year deal.

I am the "don't pay QBs crazy money unless they are transformational" guy.  So, this is pretty hard to swallow.  I don't love it and I can see a future not even where Tua is hurt and it's a disaster, but where we lose all this talent and have a good, but not stellar QB for insane cap money and a bad team around him.  It's not how I like to structure a roster, yet here we are.  I hope for the best.  The window to win is here and it's small.

This is the market, Tua makes us relevant.
It took Brees and Manning forever to win a playoff game.

There are many paths that lead to a mediocre 8-10 win team.  Tua could get hurt, the OL could fall apart, we could have key injuries at other spots, Hill could become disgruntled, etc.

But there's only one path that leads to sustained success, and it is one in which Tua is being paid well and is earning his contract.  So you might as well pay him.

If they franchise him twice there isn't a chance that he comes back for another one year contract. Nice troll though. At least you had some reasoning behind it.

Would anyone offer him over a $100 million for one year?  Because that is a basically what the Dolphins did. Because they could have gotten 3 years for a lot less than they are spending.

Tua's contract isn't a shock to me. It wasn't really that much more or less than I was expecting... it's in line with the contracts being splashed around for prospective franchise QBs, and not too different than if we franchised tagged him every year after this one.

The devil will be in the detail... how much of that guaranteed money is full guaranteed? But regardless, I knew this was really going to hurt. The walkouts that started this off-season are far from over.

Be prepared to start thinking this is Tyreek's last season in a Dolphins uniform, because he is now unaffordable. Full stop. We're no chance of staying under the cap with him on the list, and if you think he will restructure his contract for less money, you are seriously kidding yourself.

Even then, there's Buckley's chance that Holland will get the money he will want to stay. One of Chubb or Ramsey will have to go too, otherwise you can kiss Phillips goodbye as well. I'll already predict it's pretty unlikely we will be able to afford the money De’Von Achane will want after his rookie contract is up too.

This is the crunch we are looking at. All the casino chips are in for 2024, and we gotta come up with a royal flush at the poker table. After that, we're screwed.

Well the good news is I was wrong about this season being Tyreek's last in a Dolphins jersey: he's reworked his contract another 3 years for $90M (of which $65 is guaranteed):

The bad news is you can start ruling a line through just about everyone else (not named Tua and Waddle) staying on after this year.

This is wrong. The contract is a 4-year *extension* with $212 million in *new* money, so you don't get to count the "could have had him this year for $23 million".

Let's assume you could actually get him play this year on his old deal with no ill effect and that you could franchise him twice. That's $23 million for '24, $42 million for '25 (the projected franchise tag value), and $50.4 million for '26 (120% of previous years' salary). That's just over $115 for 3 years and you need to sign him for another two. There's a lot of money left to do it, but not anything like "over $100 million".

Obviously, you wouldn't get the short term cap savings (he will count $9.5 million against the cap this year, but similar amounts to the franchise tag alternate-reality for the next two).

There's also an out after 3 years according to OTC, where a pre-June 2027 cut would save the team $36 million in salary cap with only $17 million in dead money. In reality, I don't think that's the case, though, with certain amounts of Tua's salary that become guaranteed at later dates. The reporting on the details of the contract is a bit vague when it comes to details like this, but the hit would likely be $3-$20 million higher.
