i'd be interested to read their take on the new trade rumors, ... particularly the ones about brees, seau and law.
Here are the rumor capsules for those three...
Drew Brees (2/22): Cool Brees in Miami?
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting that the Dolphins are expected to make a strong run at Brees should the quarterback hit the free-agent market.
The Chargers have been discussing a long-term contract with Brees' agent, but the team's reluctance to guarantee Brees' contract for 2006, opting instead to offer an incentive-laden deal, has hampered negotiations.
"We've had a proposal that has been rejected," San Diego GM A.J. Smith said Monday in a news conference. "We'll continue to talk. How long that goes, to what point in time, I just can't tell you right now because I just know that we're talking. But we're pretty firm in what we believe and how we do things."
Smith has ruled out designating Brees as the team's franchise player, and the team is concerned about a little-known proviso in the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement that would guarantee Brees' 2006 salary if he were named a transition player.
Brees injured himself in the season finale and the Chargers have concerns about his health after he needed surgery last month to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. Brees is expected to be ready to participate in training camp, but it is not certain when his arm will return to full strength.
The Chargers and Brees technically have until the March 3 opening of the free-agency period to come to terms on a long-term deal, before he is likely lost forever.
And since it touches on Brees, here's their take on Frerotte...
Gus Frerotte (2/22):Frerotte still in Miami's plans?
The Dolphins reportedly want Frerotte to accept a pay cut so the team has room to pursue another quarterback, namely Drew Brees or Daunte Culpepper. Frerotte is scheduled to make $4.43 million in 2006.
If the Dolphins are unable to land a starter who's clearly an upgrade from Frerotte, they might consider Arizona's Josh McCown, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Under that scenario, the 26-year-old McCown and Frerotte would compete for the starting job.
Junior Seau (2/22):Dolphins to cut Seau?
The Dolphins appear ready to part ways with Seau, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
The 37-year-old Seau counts $2.92 million against the 2006 salary cap. Although he has ended the past two seasons on injured reserve, the future Hall of Fame linebacker proved in 2005 he can still be a productive player when healthy.
"I think he wants to play one more year," said Seau's agent, Marvin Demoff.
Ty Law (2/23):Law too costly for Miami
As expected, the Jets and Law parted ways this week, largely due to the $11 million option bonus Law was due March 3.
The five-time Pro Bowl player says he wants to play for a contender and has identified Miami has an appealing destination. However, the odds are against Law winding up in a Dolphins uniform, the Palm Beach Post reports.
After playing for the discounted price of $2.5 million after foot surgery, the 32-year-old is looking for his final big payday in guaranteed money.
"I'd say around $10 million," Law said.
The Dolphins likely will balk at giving a big contract to an aging cornerback who at one point last season had nearly twice as many pass interference penalties (nine) as interceptions (five).
Meanwhile, the Chiefs and new coach Herm Edwards are expected to show interest, the Kansas City Star reports. The team will have to clear some cap space and is expected to approach several players about restructuring their contracts. [/i]
