That's too bad.  I really like Tagliabue.  I think he's done a great job with the league in his tenure.

Thanks for the years, Tags.

Let me be the first person to formally nominate Dave Wannstedt to succeed Tags.

did he name a successor?  I fear for the future of the league.  He was a worthy commissioner.

this is  no shock....he's been planning it for a while.  he wanted to make sure he got the league through its 2 major hurdles:

new tv contracts
new labor agreement

he accomplished both these tasks so that the league will be stable for another few years.  until both of those agreements expire, he woulda had nothing to really do.  he's pretty old too, altho he doesnt nearly look his age

I'll miss Tags as the commish...he definitely was a sharp businessman who did well by the league.

did he name a successor? I fear for the future of the league. He was a worthy commissioner.

From the article on ESPN.com: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2376850

"Roger Goodell, the NFL's chief operating officer, and Atlanta general manager Rich McKay are the two leading candidates to succeed Tagliabue. Baltimore Ravens president Dick Cass is considered a dark horse."

If Rich McKay gets the job, look for Michael Vick to retire from playing to become the NFL's Chief Underachievement Officer

YES!  I hope.

It's about time that nazi retired.  I enjoyed watcing the NFL when Rozelle was around.  This is great news,  assuming whoever comes in isn't the same.  Zig Hail!

I am hoping for the return of the lipton ice tea splash &  the firing squad celebrations.

It may not be, because on the radio today I heard that Condoleeza Rice wants to throw her name in the hat for next NFL Commissioner.  As if she doesn't have enough to do already.

The State Department has released a statement saying Rice is not interested in the job. Besides, she can't cut those puppet strings loose long enough to leave the administration.
