I love Star Wars. Even the new trilogy. Although they had some cheesiness in them, they were good stories, which helped to tell the tale leading up to Anakin's fall. Remember, the entire Saga is about Anakin falling to the Dark side and then redeeming himself (and bringing balance to the Force).

So anyway, I was thrilled when my son expressed interest in Star Wars, and am glad he has become a huge fan of it. Because of this, we've been watching the movies a lot lately, as well as playing Lego Star Wars for Wii, and having lightsaber duels in the house.

But I have a major beef with Episode III -Revenge of the Sith. Most new viewers (kids like my son) being introduced to Star Wars watch the movies in sequence, from Episode I. So I really hate the fact that in Episode III, they reveal that Padme gave birth to twins, and that Bail Organa took the girl twin. It would've created a better storyline if they didn't reveal that there were twins.

I only bring this up because while watching Episode IV, my son always makes a remark when Luke kisses Leia before they swing across the bridge. And my son is only 5 1/2! Also, it would've been much more suspenseful for viewers like him when they hear Yoda say "No, there is another" in Episode V. Or when Luke finally realizes in Episode VI that Leia is his sister. (To make it worse, in Episode VI, Luke asks Leia if she remembers her mother, and Leia somehow remembers her, even though she died in childbirth).

I know that certain aspects of the story could not be kept secret, like the fact that Anakin was Luke's father (although they could've done this by giving Anakin a different last name). But the fact that Leia was Luke's twin could've easily been kept out of Episode III.

These are prequels, but they are intended to be watched in order of the original release.  That's your problem.  You're supposed to watch the old ones first.  Think of them as flashbacks.  They fill in gaps in a story you already know.

I realize that, but its hard to explain it to a kid that you watch episode 4-6 before 1-3. Plus, a lot of kids older than my son (like my 12 year old nephew) were first exposed to Star Wars when Episode I came out in theaters.

I hated all 3 Prequels.   I just keep the original 3 in my DVD collection.

Did anyone watch Episode 6 on Spike?  They changed Anakin's appearance at the end so he looked the the Anakin from Episode 3.   Did they think we wouldn't notice?

This was done for the DVD release of the Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition.  There are many other changes, as well.

They digitally removed Vader's eyebrows at the end of Jedi, because he's supposed to be scarred.
They used the updated CG Jabba (From Phantom Menace) for the Star Wars Extended scene.
They've further tooled with the "Greedo shoots first" scene.  Han now does some weird little dodge thing.  Terrible.
They've replaced the funky looking emperor mask from Empire Strikes back with the Emperor we all know and love.

I love Star Wars, but I'm not a purist.  I think that some of the changes they've made to the trilogy over the years are good.  ...and some are terrible.

Me too.  Actually I'm a fan of the ORIGINAL 3, not the special edition ones. The only thing I liked about the SE was the scene where Han meets Jabba at the hangar.

^^^

Really....that was one of the scenes I didn't like.  Not only did it stick out like a sore thumb, but it made the "reveal" of Jabba in Return of the Jedi useless.

yep.

the only good change to the original trilogy were the minor cosmetic ones (like inserting Ian McDiarmid's face and voice into the emperors scenes).

The greedo and jabba scenes are so terrible its almost like they were dont that way on purpose as a joke.

Even the Jabba added scene (which should exist, but maybe as a deleted scene) doesn't take away from the good things that Star Wars did.  However, the "Greedo shoots first" scene takes away from the character change that happens to Solo throughout the series.

I'm okay with all the aesthetic changes (minor and major) that were done to monsters, backgrounds, etc.  Even the redone Wampa scene is okay.  It's just blatant changes done to show off special effects just don't work.

Um, wasn't the Han/Jabba scene cut from the original movie cause they decided to change the character from a dude to the Jabba we all know and love?  And the only reason they couldn't include that scene was because they didn't have the technology to do what they really wanted to do with the new Jabba?  So, IF they had made that movie today that scene would have been included from the get-go, which I'm taking as, Jabba wasn't really supposed to be a character to be "revealed" later in the trilogy as a surprise.  Which is why Lucas stuck that scene back in like he originally intended it.

Either way, the originals are still the best.  Smiley
