My sister lives in Hong Kong, and my parents recently went on a trip to visit them.  They asked what I wanted them to bring back, and in order to avoid a bunch of kitschy crap, I elected for weird edibles.  I will give you updates as I open new things.

First up: Some kind of peanut brittle stuff.

Description: This looks like peanut brittle, but instead of an amber color, it's dark, dark brown, like the color of an Oreo, and it's not opaque.

Taste: Okay.  It's kinda like peanut brittle, but the aftertaste is different.  I've tasted it before, but it's hard to put my finger on.  Kinda sweet at first, and then a coffee bean flavor at the end, but more bitter.  Sorta like peanut brittle made with tar.

-----

Next: Green Tea Pumpkin Seeds

Description: Pumpkin seeds like you'd bake, but they're green with some flavoring -- as described.

Taste:  Buttnut.  My old lady liked them, but to me, you get the nasty texture of pumpkin seeds (like eating a handful of dried hay), mixed with the unpleasantness of Wasabi.  I don't know where they get off calling this green tea.

----

Third: Dragon Fruit

Description: Bright pink, with a white meat and black seeds.  You eat it like a mango, but without a large seed -- just cut away the outside and eat the meat, seeds included.

Taste: Delicious, surprisingly.  It tastes a lot like a pear, but with a little bit of a citrus kick.  I didn't expect this kind of taste, from the look of it.  But, very good, and I could and would eat it regularly.

I've eaten dragon fruit on a couple of occasion, including once where they dried it out and made chewy strips.  If it were available every day, I'd probably eat it almost every day...I love me some dragon.

The tar-brittle sounds pretty damned good to me as well, but pumpkin seeds in general are pretty nasty, and can't imagine a wasabi taste making the experience any more enjoyable.

edited to add...since dragon fruit is the asian cousin of the american "prickly pear," you should try some of that as well. Growing up in AZ, I got spoiled on prickly pear jams and butters. Mmmm, mmmmmmm

I thought that white spotted fruit was dragon fruit but purely on assumption.  the chinese people eat that stuff like its going out of style but none of them could tell me what it was in english.

I'm kinda surprised your folks were able to get thru US customs with fruit, though.

Dave if you are food-adventurous, you should visit mainland china someday.

I will pretty much try anything within reason, so long as I don't have ethical problems with it -- like eating a dog or something like that.

if you go to china, you eat whatever animal they give you (rat, frog, dog, pigeon, cat, etc) and they tell you its chicken.

Some new foods:

Wasabi Peas

Description: a dried, crunchy pea covered in a hot wasabi crust

Rating: gross

Ms. Dave likes these.  I think they are pretty gross.  I like wasabi on sushi, but as a snack flavor, it's just weird and out of place.   I don't think these are THAT exotic, and I believe you can get them in the ethnic section of the grocery store.

----------

Popcorn

Description:  Not popcorn.  They looked like "puffed" corn.

Rating: Pretty decent.  They definitely have a taste similar to Corn Pops cereal.  They have the same sweet flavor.  However, it also has a secondary "burnt" flavor that tastes exactly like overcooked microwave popcorn.

^ I like wasabi peas.  Ms. Guru introduced me to them like 4 years ago.  The only thing that sucks about them is the burning sinuses I get.
