Dear sir,

It is time to do a re-assessment of crime versus punishment along with what is best for the NFL. Specifically,

1. It has become apparent that a 15 yard penalty for head to head contact on a defenseless player is not effective in reducing infractions. Please review tape of game played on 09.23.12 between Houston and Denver for the most recent evidence. If the hit is intentional, and it is not difficult to recognize, immediate expulsion from the game is more fitting. A multiple game suspension should not be ruled out.

2. Get the regular refs back. Please work out an agreement. The management of the game is horrendous and they officiate the game like they get paid by the hour.

Thank you,

NFL Fan

PS. Consider reducing the penalty for holding. Holding can be called on a majority of plays and are just drive killers. The crime does not fit the punishment. Ten yards for holding and 15 for hitting a guy in the head? What am I missing?

It would be hard for me to argue against your ideas.  I was wondering the same things today.

After watching tonight's game, #2 can't come fast enough. Some replacement crews are capable, but many are not. Need the refs back ASAP.

Did the rest of you realize not a single game that started at 1:00 ended before 3:00. Most ran at least 3 1/2 hours. The Fins ended regulation at 3:36 minutes.

That is a clear sign the refs have no idea what is going on and take WAY too long doing reviews. BTW, I am sending in the letter to the NFL. May clean it up a little, but it is getting mailed. Anyone care to edit or add?

I wrote it when I was pissed (after Fin game) and had 3 glasses of wine.

I agree with the head to head penalty. There is a difference in purposely hitting and incidental contact. While we're addressing penalties. Lets look at defensive pass interference, illegal contact, & defensive holding. All three are automatic 1st downs. Pass interference should be maxed out at 15 Ted's. Holding & illegal contact should only be "replay the down" penalties.
Offensive holding, I'm actually OK with.

Good points. Personally, I abhor the defensive penalties aimed at the secondary. You cannot even touch a guy!
