From wiki:
"Another tradition from Shea Stadium making an appearance in Citi Field is the Home Run Apple. When a Mets player hits a home run, the giant apple, which has a Mets logo on the front that lights up, rises from its housing in the center field batter's eye. The new apple that has been constructed for Citi Field is more than four times the size of the previous one and was designed by Minneapolis-based engineering firm Uni-Systems.[26] Shea's original apple was located inside Citi Field's bullpen entrance gate for the 2009 season. In 2010, the Shea apple was relocated outside the ballpark at Mets Plaza, in between the Jackie Robinson Rotunda and the entrance to the Mets–Willets Point subway station.[27]"

Under Armor created these crazy uniforms in 2011.  A relatively new, but notable distinction from other college programs.

The unis edged the win for me.  I find nothing particularly special about the apple, either.  The Unis are just so crazy that I hope it keeps up.  It's still pretty new to be considered a viable tradition, but it got a weak draw.

The uniforms are hideous (and an clear knockoff of trying to keep up with Oregon's multiple uniforms which came first).

I disagree completely. Maryland's uniforms are a clear homage to Maryland's state flag:

None of Oregon's many different uniforms have anything to do with Oregon's state flag:

For the record, I have nothing against Oregon-Nike taking a walk on the uniform wild side...I actually like the Ducks' unis, but calling Maryland's unis a clear knock-off seems way-way-way off base.

(edited for a blatant typo that offended my sensibilities)

If I dig, I can find a picture that I took with the original Shea apple, outside of Citi Field.  Pretty cool tradition if you ask me.

Really, the only thing that's cool about the Apple is that they put one in the new stadium.  I would've liked for the Marlins to have kept the clock tower as an homage to their start.  Maybe have that crazy statue rise up from behind it.

These are not the only uniforms Maryland has. They also have the tortoise shells. I never said they replicated Oregon's look. I said it is a knockoff of the idea of multiple uniforms. Be serious Spider. You just like to point out obvious things that I never say and use it as an argument base.

^^^ Right back at ya, Spidey...the bracket entry wasn't about the number of uniforms Maryland has, but their freaky flag uniforms.

OOPS. Sorry to both Stroke & Spider. Not sure what I saw when I posted that name mix-up. I still consider this as part of a knockoff of Oregon's multi-uniform look and it sways my voting (along with the ugliness).

I just thought it was a clever* name-switch to highlight Spidey's propensity for nit-picking on verbiage.

* The term "clever" is used here because I have done the same thing myself in the past, therefore it must be clever. Wink

I still consider this as part of a knockoff of Oregon's multi-uniform look and it sways my voting (along with the ugliness).

In full disclosure, my voting (and appreciation of the beauty of the uniforms) may have been swayed by the fact that I attended night classes from the University of Maryland for three years. Grin

Maryland got the tie-breaking vote...

Maryland, we're all behind you,
Raise high the black and gold.
For there is nothing half so glorious,
As to see our team victorious.
We've got the steam boys,
We've got the team boys,
So keep on fighting, don't give in!
M-A-R-Y-L-A-N-D
Maryland will win!!
