They are devastated at QB due to injuries so they signed him off the Bucs practice squad.  They are all but guaranteed to cut Jimmy G as he has no guaranteed money left and they have no other QB worth a damn on the roster, so he may actually get a legit chance to start.

How would he perform if given the opportunity? I have no idea but it's fun to think about.

Everything I've read from Lynch-Shanny points to the team bringing Jimmy back for next season. If you've read something different, I'd love to read it as well.

I've read his contract and the Niners cap situation and all of that points to a QB who can't stay on the field not being paid $25 Million next year.

OK...you go with your interpretation, and I'll go with what the organization has been saying all season.

I did see the headline that "I believe" you may have based your incorrect assumption off of. It said Jimmy G was not likely to return. It was actually referring to not returning "this season though."

Jimmy Garoppolo has a career record of 21-5 as a starter.

The last time Garoppolo came back from an injury (ACL tear), he led the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

Garoppolo will be the starting QB for the 49ers next season.

I have to agree with Sunstroke on this, Edgecrusher.  $25 million for a starting QB who is not elite but well above average is a bargain.  I see starting QB's who are way worse than Jimmy G making over $30 million a year.

Sure, it's certainly possible but not the slam dunk you guys may think it is. The Niners only have $21 Million in cap space and a lot of guys becoming free agents, Trent Williams included.

In 2017 he got hurt and only played in 6 games.
In 2018 he got hurt and only played in 3 games.
In 2019 he played a full year and had a very good, Top 10 QB season.
In 2020 he got hurt and will only play in 6 games. A very poor 6 games.

Combine his injury history with his salary and their cap crunch and it makes sense to move on. If they keep him, it's more because they don't have any other options other than a free agent retread or starting a QB they drafted in the first round.

If you see Jimmy G on the field in week 16 or 17, it means SF definitely intends to keep him next year.  His next season is guaranteed for injury, so if they throw him out there and he gets hurt again, the decision is taken out of their hands.

Not the whgole salary, but something like $8 Million. At that point, it becomes a $17 Million decision to keep him and it increases the chances that they do depending on the injury.

Short of a horrific offseason weed-whacker accident that costs him his throwing hand, I see Jimmy-G under center for the Niners next season.

Well, they have no in house options to replace him. Even if Rosen plays and somehow lights up the world in 2 games, they would be skeptical of putting the franchise in his hands. So, to me it will depend on where they fall in the draft and if there are any good options on the FA Market. I am basing the majority of my thoughts on him being cut due to their cap situation. If they had $80 Million in room then it's a no brainer to me but not with their current space and number of free agents to be. Lot of moving parts.

Unless the 49ers have plans to draft a QB, which would be cheaper than a free agent, the cap situation doesn't matter because any decent QB is going to cost as much as Jimmy.
