I've wanted to pass along some soundbites from players and coaches as well as some quotes but never figured they were worth a whole thread. This will be a thread to share those type of things.

- Travis Wingfield@WingfieldNFL
McDaniel explained the moment he first heard that the Tyreek Hill trade might be a possibility on Le Batard:

Grier: I just got a call from the Chiefs talking about Tyreek Hill.

Mike: What?!?! Tell them they can have everything!

- Tua to Trent and Tyreek

- Joe Schad@schadjoe
Tyreek Hill said on NFL Network that interceptions are not all on Tua. He says sometimes it’s the receivers’ fault. This mirrors what Trent Sherfield said recently. #MiamiDolphins

- "It's the most accurate, catchable ball I've ever seen." – Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel on what he's seen so far from Tua Tagovailoa.

- Pretty cool how the Dolphins handled the Adam Shaheen injury
On Tuesday, head coach Mike McDaniel explained that whole process during his media availability, and why he ended up on injured reserve.

“He was practicing with nothing holding him back,” McDaniel said. “We 100 percent thought he was 100 percent healthy. Such is the nature of veteran players, you occur nicks along the way and that’s why you have a physical before things can be finalized and the whole trade processed. We were as surprised as I know Adam was, and that was something we definitely didn’t anticipate. But once we got that information, we had to digest it – all of us, including Adam – and once we got back and he got some more opinions, he has decided to get surgery, which puts him on IR and out for the season, which we are in 100 percent support of.”

Interestingly, Shaheen is in the last year of his deal, and the Dolphins could’ve released him and saved nearly $2 million in cap space, but they’ve opted to keep his contract on the books. This will allow him to recover and rehab with the help of the Dolphins’ training and medical staffs, as well as use their facilities to work.

That was a really nice thing to do for Shaheen. Maybe we felt we needed a bit of an image rehab, but either way it was a good thing to do.

NFL teams cannot simply cut injured players.

For vested veterans (4+ accrued seasons), like Shaheen, players can be placed directly on IR, while non-vested players go on waivers with an injury designation (returning to the team if they clear waivers, after which the team can place them on IR).

Once on IR, the team can work out an injury settlement with the player, should they wish to do so (typically if the injury is considered "minor"). Settlements are, just by-the-by, fixed in terms of monetary value and the question is only how many weeks the player and team agree that the injury will cost the player (i.e. if the injury costs the player 3 games, the settlement is 3/17th of the player's salary). The team has 5 days to work out a settlement with the player, otherwise the player stays on IR (or possibly has to file a Injury Grievance).

That's not to say that teams (and players) cannot pull all sorts of crap during the various stages of this process, but the Dolphins cannot simply cut Shaheen.

Grier and McDaniel were asked about Gesicki today and this was their response ...

Grier said two teams called inquiring about tight end Gesicki, but the Dolphins made no calls and he’s not being shopped.

Grier: “We challenged him to do something he hasn’t done before. Last couple weeks, he has had some great strides. Was never about moving him or trying to [move him]. Teams called asking. I will always listen; it doesn’t mean we’re going to do anything. It’s negligent if you don’t [listen].”

McDaniel:
“There was noise. One of the cooler parts of training camp in general is Mike worried about getting better at blocking and catching. Each and every day, he’s doing one or two things better to his standard to the way he wants his football to look. That’s a guy that teammates and coaches respect who can ignore the noise and get better.”

After what we've seen so far you have to know coach McDaniel is drawing up some plays just for Mike.
