Per Adam Schefter.

Mike White is a fine backup when he isn't asked to throw over 40 times a game as the Jets had him do last year. He has a lot of time to learn the offense and get used to the receivers. All things considered, it's a solid signing. Certainly no QB competition coming.

A little less than what we were paying Teddy but hopefully will have better results. I still think Brady will be in play if Tua goes out long term but White hould be serviceable in the interim.

He sucks, but maybe that's for the best.  I could be polishing a turd here, but for him to just be able to come in and fill in once in a while, maybe it's the reset that he needs.

He is not equipped to be a starter in the NFL right now.

Yeah, he's not a starter who can throw 40 times a game and light it up, but he's competent and that's really the ceiling for a backup QB. Let's just hope this isn't our modern era Ray Lucas or that he will even be needed.

I think he's a scheme fit more than anything. Probably able to run the Tua offense better than Thompson in my humble opinion.

Word is he is a very good quick passer and that's how we run our offense, so seems like a much better fit than Bridgewater. Teddy will be lucky to find any job this offseason above $2 Million a year.

Total waste of money, he sucks.  If Tua goes out injured they could pick up an unsigned player just as good for a $1M.  They should roll with Thompson and draft a guy.

The most generous thing I can say about this signing is that it ensured the best QB NYJ had on their roster last season would not return to the Jets.

At first I was checking this wasn't April 1st when I saw the title...

We just get some cap space, and then make a bizarre move like this - I just don't get why. There are far more important position to spend that cash on.

This seems like an ABSURD amount of money for a backup.

And, indeed, it isn't actually what we're paying him.

It's a 2 year, $8 million deal.

There's another $8 million in incentives, bringing the total possible payout to the reported $16 million.

$4 million a year is fine for a backup quarterback. I have no issues with that.

For anyone interested, the deal is structured with $1 million in salary this year, $3.5 million next year, $3.5 million signing bonus. In other words, it's a $4.5 million 1 year deal with a club option for $3.5 million for a second year. The cap hit it $2.8 million this year and $5.2 million next year (or $1.7 million dead money if we cut him).

can somebody explain to me why we are not going after a big time QB free agent.  Tua will get hurt...And it will be same SH*T different year.

this team is literally one QB away from being a serous superbowl contender.

and we go sign ....Mike white...smh

^ If you look at the Dolphins with a skeptical eye, what do we have? Two very good wide receivers and some promising pieces on defense. I say promising because even when they were healthy last year, they didn't produce. Maybe Ramsey changes that, maybe he doesn't.

The Dolphins are a potential SB contender *because* of Tua.

You are right that the team is effectively gambling on Tua being healthy. If he is (stays) healthy, the team is in a position to make a deep playoff push.

So, how do you upgrade from Tua, if you believe the risk of injury to be too great?

What is the cost of this "big time QB free agent"? Rodgers isn't a free agent. Jackson isn't a free agent. The two best *free agents* were Jimmy G and Derek Carr, neither of whom have the ceiling of Tua. Carr in particular would also have come at a cost that would have been difficult to absorb for a franchise that is already fairly strapped for cap space in the years to come.

If you mean trading for one (Rodgers/Jackson), these come with an even greater cap hit and we would have to part with some significant draft picks. Rodgers looks like he could be had for a reasonably high 1st round pick (Jets have #13), while Jackson would cost 2 1st rounders. The problem is, we don't HAVE a first round pick this year and future picks are discounted by about a round, so you can probably add a first rounder to each of those prices (our 2024 and 2025 firsts for Rodgers, our 2024, 2025, and 2026 for Jackson - although it would obviously be possible to package some second rounders to get a first round pick this year or next).

So, yeah, it is a gamble, but then it always is. Trading for or signing a good-not-great QB might get us a higher floor, but we need the very high ceiling to be a SB contender, so ultimately the higher floor doesn't matter too much. The only option would be a great QB and I don't see how we could afford that.

Without their 2023 first, MIA literally cannot offer Jackson a contract until after the draft.  After the draft, they would be able to get him for two firsts just like anyone else.

That said, the prevailing wisdom is that BAL will match any offer.  It's hard to tell how much of the dynamic with Jackson is teams saying "We aren't going to participate in this theater" and how much is just outright collusion between owners, but there you go.

Don't forget that if health is such a big concern for us, don't sign the guy whose last 2 seasons ended on IR while missing 10 games combined at a minimum. Who knows how many more games Lamar would've missed had the Ravens advanced in the playoffs. Is he even healthy now?

The one positive I'll say about Mike White is that he's not going to be a deer in headlights.  He's already shit the bed on the largest stage and took it fine.

So, I don't think he's going to get rattled if he has to start a game or two in Tua's absence.
