Good teams at the wrong time. Bad luck. Bad teams. We've had it all.

Imagine if the Buffalo Bills of the 90's didn't exist, would we have made a Superbowl? Definitely in 1992-93. They knocked us out again 2 years prior.

No Buffalo and I reckon we should have made it in 1990 and 1992. The injury to Marino (and then Mitchell) killed us in 1993. We should have made it in 1994 anyway, but then unbelievably choked at home to the Chargers.

I think there's more consensus on this position than any of the others.

1.  We choked on the road to the Chargers thanks to the team going in the locker room up 21-6 and in control of the game, then never coming back out for the second half.

2.  Mitchell was actually playing well when Marino went down.   What killed them was that they started thinking Super Bowl after beating Dallas on Thanksgiving and not putting in the work for the rest of the season.  That was 100% on Shula.  Had he been let go after that collapse, Jimmy would've been the coach in 1994 and with a team that talented, he could've done something special.

I did mean the season ending injury to Mitchell (like Marino) killed us in 1993, but I can see how what I said could be taken either way. I agree he was playing at a very high level at that point, high enough to be snatched by the Lions as their starter the next season.

Journeyman Steve DeBerg started that classic Thanksgiving game against Dallas after they both were lost for the year, and the rest of the season - I seem to remember he also got beaten up pretty bad the next game against the Giants, but somehow made it through the rest of the year. It just wasn't the same though with him under center.

Was Doug Peterson on that team as well?  I think he was the holder on the field goal attempt against Dallas

Correct.

Fun fact - He is one of only a few people that have a Superbowl Champion ring as both a player (in his case as a backup at Green Bay) and as a head coach.
