Christian Wilkins is in contract extension negotiations with the team, and has mentioned he wants to be paid in the top 10 of defensive tackles.

11.5 sacks, 33 tackles for loss over 4 seasons (64 games)

Do you think he's worth top-10 money?

It's hard to measure D-Line guys by sacks and tackles alone, there are a lot of advanced metrics about that position. I barely see any games being in NY but he is very highly praised around the league as being a top talent at his position. So, if we don't give him Top 10 money, someone else will.

If the numbers make sense for us, I would absolutely do it.

He is worth much more than his stats although his tackle number should be added to that and his is huge. Teammates respond to him and he always sets the tone, and never gives up on a play even if it means running 20 yards up field to make the tackle. His leadership is definitely worth money. Besides that ... the guy never gets hurt and is always available. I would have no problem giving him 20 million a year.

I was not implying that the answer to this question should be based on sacks and TFL.

But, I agree that he is a key player on a budding defense.  Top 10 in the league?  I don't know, maybe.  But the Dolphins have a history of drafting good players, not extending them beyond their rookie contract, and letting them walk to play well on other teams.  Let's break that bad habit this time, Wilkins is a must-keep.  Hopefully they can find a creative way to make it work.

Honestly, I can't think of many players that MIA failed to re-sign who went on to become stars elsewhere.
Traded away?  Sure.  But as far as players the Dolphins allowed to walk... Charles Clay?  I'm drawing blanks.

Sorry ... I was just throwing that out there. I wasn't necessarily speaking to what you had posted. I keep hearing talking spitting out stats but he is much more valuable to this team than a stat. I can't think of many people I could ever say that about but he is definitely in that category. Mike Florio said today he could see 21-22 million a year for him and I think that would be enough to keep him. Drew had previously said over he sees him getting over 20 so I really hope Miami doesn't try the Dalvin Cook negotiations with him.
