First, and early, on the chopping block the Jets fired Robert Saleh.  Obviously, the inability to get along with Aaron Rodgers had something to do with it, but I'd lay all the blame on Rodgers.  I don't think Saleh is a great head coach, but I think he is being the scapegoat from much of the hype that the Jets were going to be a great team this year and compete not only for the division but the playoffs.  I think the Jets just made themselves worse.

^^^ I believe the term is "The Peter Principle," where someone gets promoted beyond their ability to do the job. Saleh was a great DC in San Fran, but I don't think he ever became a good HC.  Unlike our next DC, Demeco Ryans, who definitely became a very good HC (so far) when he left.

The original term actually referred to someone who rose to their level of incompetency and then remained in that position until retirement. What occurs in the NFL is actually more merit based with incompetency getting fired and then often rehired at their last level of success. And then often a few years later given a second chance.

^^^ That is certainly one application of the Peter Principle, but if referencing the original 1968 book by the same name, it really doesn't specify retirement at all...just that the person is promoted to the point where they are no longer competent at their job.

Matt Eberflus was fired on Black Friday.

The current ongoing tally of HC firings are now:

That's twice now that Dennis Allen has been fired midseason.
