Beckett made his Sox debut today against Tampa Bay.  He threw 3 innings, topped out at about 30 pitches.  He had great velocity on his fastball, hitting 97mph 10 times.

Problem is, Tampa Bay was hitting all of them.  Beckett was taken yard by Lugo in the 1st, Jonny Gomes took him deep later that same inning.  He sat down the side 1, 2, 3 in the second before getting roughed up for three more runs in the third inning.

Between Randy Johnson getting roughed up in his first appearance and Beckett get nailed today, NYY and BOS are both off to terrific starts!   Roll Eyes

Randy Johnson is all washed up I think.  See what he does this year.

You're talking about a guy coming off a 17 win season, ERA under 3.70 and exceeded 200 strike outs?  I don't think he's washed up at all.

Don't forget he had 225 IP too.

As far as Beckett goes, the headlines should read "Beckett Roughed Up, But Not Injured So Sox Don't Give a Shit Because it's Spring Training". The same headline can be said about roughly 200 pitches in the league as well.

It only matters when you are fighting for a job.

Hes not the same guy he was a few years ago.

In 2004 he was awesome, his problem last year was his HR total. That can be attributed to a few things:

1) He doesn't brush people off anymore
2) Harder hitting league
3) Tipping his pitches

He tipped his pitches a LOT last year, ESPN even had a few segments on it during the playoffs. It would explain his first playoff start. If Randy Johnson gets roughed up the world doesn't stand still. However, when he is throwing 94 MPH sliders UP and AWAY and they are being crushed for Homeruns, the batter knows what's coming. Gotta blame Mel Stottlemyre for not finding out what it was.

Plus, he is a bit more comfortable in NY and while he won't go back to 2004 form, I think he will find a nice medium between 2004 and 2005.

Pavano is still useless trash.
