Players pumped that offseason workouts worth the weight

By Tim Graham | Sunday, April 13, 2008, 05:52 PM

Dolphins football operations boss Bill Parcells made it pretty clear at his introductory news conference he was none too thrilled about the previous efforts of former strength and conditioning coaches Matt Schiotz and Brad Ohrt.

Both were brought in by previous coach Cam Cameron and quickly were shown the door at the end of a season that featured 16 players on injured reserve.

Parcells was fixed on making an impact in the weight room, and that apparently is happening already in Davie under the supervision of new strength and conditioning gurus Evan Marcus and Dave Puloka.

Parcells wants the foundation of the Dolphins forged in the weight room.

Several Dolphins have commented that this is the most strenuous weight conditioning program they’ve encountered in the NFL or college. One player, who said he always considered himself a workout fiend, admitted he had no right to think that way until now.

But the program’s most inspirational aspect might not be the regimen set forth by Marcus and Puloka.

It appears to be Parcells, who has made it a habit to quietly roam the weight room on a regular basis, not saying much … just watching.

Parcells’ dreaded glare has created what many insist is a much-needed edginess.

This is exactly what this team needs.  If you know you're gonna feel the coach's boot in your ass if you let down, you're NOT gonna let down.

I'll bet not a single player ever feared that boot under the Wanny and Camoron regimes.

Exactly.  Lemme ask you this..... if Saban didn't quit as Dolphins coach, would he still be a "miserable SOB?"

Ok ... this article reeks of sillyness.  I'm not sure how these guys are acting like they need someone to force them to workout.  I thought we were talking about grown men?  Oh yes I forgot ... the millions of dollars they make isn't good enough to motivate them to play hard either!  Roll Eyes

no, it's only the way he left, lied, and cheated us as well as treated the media and fans.  aside from all that horribleness, i thought he was a hell of a motivator.

...huh?

During the end of the Saban era, the standard story was that the players were tuning out the tough talk speeches, that everyone associated with the organization was sick of his antics, etc.

I'm tired of the good cop/bad cop treadmill.  I will no longer buy the idea that being tough (or being nice) is the key to success, because I've seen that it simply isn't (look at the last two Super Bowl-winning head coaches for evidence of that).  Being tough/nice is neither good nor bad; it's simply different.

I like the fact that this regime is putting a greater emphasis on the Strength and Conditioning programs.  Last year, it seemed like the Dolphins were sucking wind a lot earlier than other teams were, and when the injuries started to pile up, I kind of felt like the S&C program wasn't where it was supposed to be.  At this time last year, the Dolphins were holding a mini-camp because new NFL head coaches are allowed to have an extra mini-camp.

This year, Coach Sparano chose to forego that extra mini-camp to devote more time to the weight room and conditioning programs.  Hopefully, this turns out to be a positive for the team in the long run.

You can't argue with the fact that Camoron held several key veterans out during the preseason, and as a result, they were sucking wind in the 4th quarter of the first two regular season games.

Also taking a night off from coaching during the final preseason game??  WTF??

But the veterans respected him and played hard for him..... something Cameron was never able to get them to do.
