I really liked the beginning of X-Files, when each episode was a stand-alone story, and only character development from episode to episode.  When it turned into a soap opera, with one long story arc, I lost interest.

I also lost interest in Lost halfway through season two when I felt like I was getting dragged around.

So, for now: no winner -- X-Files fizzled out.  If Lost does the same, X-Files would be the winner.  But, a good ending could save Lost.
