Beck busting his hump

By Edgar Thompson | Friday, April 18, 2008, 12:08 PM

My shoulder gets sore just thinking about John Beck’s off-season.

Looking to put a shaky rookie season behind him, Beck has been working overtime.

“He’s thrown close to 4,000 balls here with (QBs coach) David Lee,” GM Jeff Ireland said.

And Beck surely is spending even more time and energy in the film room.

This is the same guy who had his wife running pass patterns in their living room last season or spent a day at Disneyland with his kid day dreaming about two-a-days.

Beck’s dedication and hard work doesn’t mean he’ll win the starting job over Josh McCown, a six-year veteran with 31 starts whom the Dolphins signed last month.

But Beck, 26, should have a leg up on whoever the Dolphins pick up next week in the NFL draft. The team could use the first pick of the second round (No. 32) to grab one of the top QBs available or wait until pick No. 57 or No. 64, if not later.

With the team’s QB of the future undecided, Ireland said anything could happen in the coming months with Beck and Co.

“He’s done a nice job trying to develop (Beck),” Ireland said of Lee. “There’s a comfort level here, but anything can happen in the draft.”

It's hard for me to comment on John Beck any more, because too many of you folks mistakenly believe that I WANT the guy to fail.

I don't, not at all... I just BELIEVE he will fail.

Good luck, John...

Come back from the dark side, believe he will succeed.   Grin

I feel exactly how stroke does.  It is a mistake to think that I hope he fails.  How stupid would that be?  I wish players to fail, but on other teams not my own like Tom Bwayyydy  Cry.  Its just that I have a feeling he isn't going to amount to much as a quarterback in the NFL.

I do believe that some "fans" who had their hopes set on Bwady Quinn want Beck to fail.

One thing is for sure, if Beck is jerked around he will fail.

Whoever starts this year .... give him 16 starts.  If it gets really ugly in any game then pull relieve him.

Beck has 5 career starts.  McCown has 31 starts in his 6 seasons of experience.  Who one do you think will improve more?

Let me just say this:

If we go into training camp with McCown and Beck as our top two guys, we are in deep trouble.
Is Trent Green still available?  How about Vinny T?  We could bring back Marino and risk half the Dolphin nation going blind.

Worse than 1-15?  Com'on, we're in deep trouble regardless.  Does anyone think 8-8 is realistic?  6-10 and Sporano gets mentioned for COTY.

Develop the young guys.

I think we're gonna draft another QB, but not in the first three rounds.

OK ... I have to ask.  Who could we put at QB and not be in trouble? Do you think Dan Marino in his prime would make it to the playoffs this season with this team?    Undecided

I think we should draft a QB with one of our second round picks.

I think we should draft a QB with one of our second round picks.

I think that should very much depend on what quarterbacks are available at what picks. When does Brohm go? When does Henne?

One problem is that we have no picks from the top of the fourth to (close to) the bottom of the 6th. A guy like Colt Brennan is a major stretch at the top of 4th, but might be gone at the bottom of the 6th. If he's available at that point, I wouldn't mind picking him.

I doubt we'll use any of our mid-round picks on a QB. It just doesn't seem like that kind of QB draft.

Unlike yout total man love for Jake or Chris Long!!!
Beck is not the future, nothing against the guy but he just doesn't have the skills to be a starter in the NFL.

I agree with that.  There's some good talent worth looking at in the second day of the Draft.  John David Booty of USC, Josh Johnson of San Diego, Erik Ainge of Tennessee, Kevin O'Connell of San Diego State, plenty to choose from in the later rounds!
