Growing up in MA (and most of New England) is an identity. From foods that I like that most have never heard of to the passion that I've always had for my teams to the occasional dropped "r"

You can take the girl out of MA but you can't take the MA out of the girl

C. It's cold as shit there, always - I just saw a picture of a game at Fenway Park, and everyone is wearing jackets and warm hoodies (this is in the middle of June). WTF?

This is one of the best parts about living in Boston I think.  I wouldnt want it any other way!

    G. Puerto Rico is much cooler and deserves to be a state much more than Massasasasasasasaschusetts - Can we make an appeal to the US Senate and house of representatives to trade MA for PR? We wouldn't have to add or remove stars from the flag - we're simply allowing them to be their own country, or merge with Canada.

I'd just like to point out that Puerto Rico doesn't WANT to be a state. They've had 3 referendums on it in the past 3 decades and all have rejected statehood (not that a positive outcome would have automatically made them a state, that would be for congress to decide).

Puerto Rico is a bit of an odd place in political terms. It's extremely divided in terms of what future people want with respect to the (rest of the) US. No one is really happy with the status quo, but without a clear majority in favor of SOMETHING, nothing is likely to happen.

It's not a recession, it's a correction!

Correction: it's a recession.

Sure.... if you want to redefine "recession".

1. Recession - Do you people even know what you're talking about? No, you don't. This has nothing to do with politics - I don't give a shit about politics or if the country is ready for Barack Obama - WE ARE NOT IN A RECESSION!!!! It's not even close. It's a period of "slow-growth" in the economy - NOT A RECESSION. A recession is when the economy's level of growth is in the red for two consecutive periods of time (months, normally). This has NOT happened - we are still growing, albeit at a much smaller pace than this time in 2007. We had a recession in 2000, but if you lived in Florida, you didn't feel it, as Florida was the only state that was not very much affected by it. And for those of you who like being over-dramatic, a depression is a very severe recession, like in 1929. And no, that is not happening either. Just because gas is over $4 / G and everyone's homes are worth less doesn't make it a recession.

Whether or not we're in a recession right now is speculative.  You don't know until after it's happened.  We'll know after the data comes in.

We may very well be in a recession.  We may not.

I'm jumping into this a little late, but BoSoxGirl, I completely get where you are coming from.  I get really annoyed when someone from either coast makes a sweeping generalization about the middle of the country, like the entire interior is nothing but a bunch of hicks.  I love my hometown and would never want to live anywhere else, so when people put it down, I take it personally.  Rock on babe!

Many people who have spent their entire lives in the city feel that way.  It wasn't long ago that a college-educated professional man told me the Eastern Washington would basically die without Western Washington support as "EVERYTHING" they have comes through our ports.  Apparently he doesn't know the Mariner-BoSox Highway (I-90) moves freight in both directions.

During the controversy surrounding the 2000 election a young employee actually asked why the votes of rural voters even count.

The "if your were really that smart you'd be living in a big city on the coast" atitude is alive and well.

Maine is like that, the northern part of the state is poorly funded, poorly educated.  Maine's unemployment is at 5.5% right now.  If you cut Maine at the line where Augusta is and make the top half of the state vanish the unemployment rate would actually be 1.8% - a huge dip.

Because of this the vast assumption is that people from 'the county' are a bunch of stupid hicks that can't get out of their own way.  Not the case.  The reason the unemployment is higher is because northern Maine relied forever on industry (mills, etc) and has had a tougher time reinventing itself.  The fact that the unemployment rate in that part of the state isn't 10% is testimony that the northern part IS making headway and has decent leadership.

I think this is a similar situation with Florida where the powers that be are even kicking around the idea of splitting the state in two.  South Florida has both Miami and Ft. Lauderdale raking in tourist $$ while the northern part has Daytona and (I could be wrong on this one) Orlando.

Orlando is too removed from what I consider North Florida. We are basically the central part of the state. I don't think Tampa, Orlando, or even Daytona relate to North Florida any more than people around Miami.
