OK, here are the rules:  Choose your favorite films from the following categories that best exemplify said category.  For example, my favorite movie of all time is Fight Club, but it won't make this list, because it's sort of a genre blend and doesn't capture any one genre specifically.

Action:
Terminator 2

Adventure:
Raiders of the Lost Ark

Comedy:
There's Something About Mary

Crime/Gangster:
The Usual Suspects

Drama:
The Shawshank Redemption

Epics/Historical:
Braveheart

Horror:
Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Musical:
Chicago

Sci-Fi:
The Matrix

War:
Platoon

Western:
Unforgiven

You know I'm game. Here's mine:

Action:
Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Adventure:
Seven Samurai

Comedy:
Monty Python & the Holy Grail

Crime/Gangster:
Sonatine

Drama:
Oldboy

Epics/Historical:
Patton (Or again, Saving Private Ryan)

Horror:
There isn't a good one. But I'd default to DotD 2004 as well.

Musical:
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

Sci-Fi:
2001: A Space Odyssey

War:
Patton (Or again, Saving Private Ryan)

Western:
Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo

Although I disagree with the genres selected...these are more suited to videogames. Where's the documentar? What about Silent films, Childrens films, animated films, foreign films, etc? This selection of genres eliminates 5 of my all-time top 10 from contention because they are genre-benders.

Twofold.  First, I got the genre list off of some generic movie website.  Secondly, I didn't want to make a huge, daunting list, so I picked the most popular ones.  If we can get people to participate with this thread, maybe we can do a follow-up thread, with some less-traditional genres.

Yeah, that's kinda the point.  We end up talking about the same movies over and over, so I thought this would be a good way to pick some different stuff.

Some interesting entires here...

Two votes for Terminator 3 over it's vastly superior predecessors?   Shocked
Amadeus listed as a musical?  Huh
Brian Griese listed as a movie?   Grin

Seeing the responses makes me think that the crime/gangster genre is truly the most consistently-good genre in all of cinema. Such a high percentage of films in that genre are so good. Scarface, Godfather, all of the Scorsese mob flicks, the wealth of quality Japanese Yakuza films, the Guy Ritchie gangster films, etc. So much to choose from.

Absolutely.  Have you seen it?  I think it won an Oscar for best song...or at least was nominated.
