Sports Talk - Tampa Bay Sports Blog
MLB Umpire Doug Eddings should be fined, suspended

I'm going to make this short, because I can hardly contain myself writing this blog.  I have never, and if someone has seen a worst call in baseball, please share it.  The Rays got screwed Sunday vs.White Sox, and MLB umpire Doug Eddings is in the middle of the controversy.

You have to see this play to believe it, but take my word for it, and anyone else who saw it; Willie Aybar getting called for interference in a run down with A.J. Pierzynski was absolutely WRONG!  No question, no defense, period.  A.J. simply threw an elbow out to initiated contact with Aybar who was clearly getting out of the way of the play once he threw the ball to Jason Bartlett, who put the tag on AJP.

It's doesn't make matters worst the Rays went on to lose.  This was a wrong call involving two teams in a pennant race.  If Commisisoner Bud opens his eyes, I would immediately expand instant-replay beyond home runs.  You cannot have calls like this happen in any game, at this level.  I fully expect Eddings to be reprimanded, fined and suspended.  But we're dealing with a bunch of wimps in the big MLB house.  They'll hope this thing blows over without ever addressing it.

This was the worst thing I have ever seen...sadly I have been a Rays fan since their inception...finally I have a year where I can be proud of my team and I swear to God
if this douche bag is the reason we don't win the division or get a wild card birth (which I doubt because of right now we are still 4 1/2 up on Boston) I will go even more ape-shit then when I witnessed this malarkey the other day.  FIRE DOUG EDDINGS!!!!!

You want to start fining the umpire for bad calls?

This letter is stupid.  Sure, that was a bad call.  The umpire got tricked by the guy's flop.  If you want to fine someone, fine the guy who's taking the flop.

I have to ref kickball games (not the MLB, obviously), but I know what it's like to have to make a call that you couldn't really tell what happened.  ...you have to make your best judgment based on the angle you have.  I've made bad calls, but we don't have instant replay to go on.  It's not like this umpire is crooked.  ...he just got tricked by an acting performance.

And please...don't blame one bad call by a ref in a 162 game season for not winning the division.  ...good lord.

Ok for one this is not just one bad call...Doug Eddings has had many bad calls including the ALCS between the White Sox and the Angels a few years back...he gets paid to do his job and he does not do it well...as far as not winning the division because of this...I was just enphasizing my point...I know one game does not determain a season but do a search on Doug Eddings...He has a ton of negative press

If he's such a bad ref, and you think he should be fired....sure.

But, when you have to ref games every night, you're allowed to make mistakes.  Fining a ref for a judgment call just makes no sense.

Actually, it's not.  There is a free blog with that name, but it doesn't even have it's own URL, and hasn't been updated since 2005.

A.J. does shit like this ALL THE TIME... He knows the rules as well as any player in the game...period, and simply isn't afraid to try to manipulate the rules to help his team win. I heard one player on the radio talking about A.J. behind the plate when he came to bat...he said A.J. would pick up small pebbles and throw them at his shoes while he was digging in for his at-bat.

Just seen the play.  Great play by AJ.  Bad call from an ump who was in the perfect position to not be able to see the elbow.

Sure if you like busch league antics....been a couple weeks now so I'm not as pissed as I was...still....bullshit call.....Eddings is a homer for the White Sox...or at least A.J.....and of course major league baseball does nothing about Eddings onces again...IMO he should take up his passion as a secret service agent so we don't have to see his ass anymore..."Eddings the president has been shot by A.J. Perzinski!"  "NO WAY! Willie Aybar did it!"  god i hate that asshole.  I think he has a man crush on A.J.

Does MLB have any kind of "no flopping" equivalent rule?

I'd like to see the NFL start throwing 15 yard flags for it, especially for punters who roll around like pussies after getting nudged.
