I wonder what the team got in trade?

All the talk about the Dolphins carrying four quarterbacks was rendered moot Friday afternoon after they traded Josh McCown to the Carolina Panthers, according to a source.

McCown, 29, only played in the first preseason game against the Tampa Bay Bucs and was 5-of-8 for 35 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. McCown was signed in the offseason to a two-year deal worth $6.25 million, including $2.5 million guaranteed, to battle second-year quarterback John Beck for the starting job.

However, once the Dolphins signed former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington the day before the Bucs' game and began favoring rookie Chad Henne it became evident that either McCown or Beck, or both would be cut or traded.

McCown didn't play a down in the final three preseason games as Pennington and Henne shared the bulk of the snaps with Beck mopping up late in the fourth quarter.

Damnit. Please let Henne or the punter hold the ball for the kicker. We dont need Beck holding it.

But, he didnt cost us anything, so its a free draft pick, or whatever.

Nah...no need to cut Beck at this point. Lock him in at the #3, continue to try to develop him and see if you can get at least a serviceable backup out of him. If you don't see any development of note, cut him loose next year and go digging in the late rounds for another diamond to back up Henne.

What the? I think several of us have been saying this all along, and you were calling us fools and idiots! (we still might be fools and idiots, but for other reasons).
I don't think anyone was saying "Beck should start", but you weren't even willing to listen!

Anyway, this at least alleviates the fear I had that McCown or Beck would get cut, signed by New England (considering their back up woes) and end up playing against the Fins and turning into a stud (like all former Fins who go to NE).

Ugh, i still hope we cut beck.

With a rookie QB waiting in the wings, I think it would have made sense to keep McCown for his experience, and look to move Beck.   Since Miami is signficantly under the cap, I don't think this is a financially motivated move.  I guess it came down to which QB got an offer first.

I don't really care all that much either way.  Miami's future isn't with McCown or Beck.  Since I don't believe we are fighting for a playoff spot, the loss of Pennington will likely cost us some wins, but it won't make a difference in whether we reach the post season.   I can't believe we got much for him, but I guess something is better than nothing.

Philly...serious question for you: Are you on drugs? I challenge you to find ANY reference to me saying to cut Beck. Ever. Or me calling anyone a fool or an idiot for having an opinion on Beck that differed from my own. I've listened (read, actually) every word, and considered it as being what it is...another person's opinion. I've dogged Beck for his ineptitude on the field, because I've witnessed enough of it with my own eyes that I feel it is justified.

You must have me confused with someone else...because while I think Beck sucks, I've done none of the things you just overreacted about.

"Beck has started his last NFL game."  What were we supposed to take away from that?

Doesn't exactly mean the same thing as "Cut Beck".   All it means is that SunStroke thinks (and I concur) that Beck will be nothing more than a clipboard holder for the rest of his career.... wherever he goes.

I am glad we were able to get something for one of these guys.... just like Travis Daniels.  This also settles the QB issue going into the regular season.

You guys need to be in the NFL judging talent if you can tell after what we have seen of Beck that you can already determine what he will be.

2.5 million for what will most likely be a 7th Rd. pick.  Not exactly what one would think a 7th Rd. pick would have gotten in a signing bonus.

Isn't that hindsight?

What QBs were on the roster when McCown was signed?  Did anyone know for sure that Henne or Pennington would be available?

Seriously Jeff... I was thinking the same exact thing as Philly.  It does seem like you have done some back tracking from your original position.

I can't imagine we'll get much for McCown.

I'd have traded him for a Snickers bar.

Mmmmm, Snickers....

On another note. I think the Bucs are going to release Chris Simms. Betcha Parcells picks him up....
