Dolphins Depth Chart - Sept. 1

The exhibition season provided enough evidence that the Dolphins won't be terrible this season. At worst we can expect bad, and coming off 1-15, I suspect most Dolphins fans can live with bad.

However, there is potential for a respectable record. This team has a decent batch of starters, but there is minimal depth. That means, much like last season, the Dolphins can't endure many injuries. For instance, there are a couple of players (Jake Long, Vernon Carey, Jason Ferguson, Joey Porter, Ted Ginn Jr.) the Dolphins can't afford to lose because the drop off to the players behind them is extremely steep.

Here's a look at the talent this team will be putting on the field for practice today as the Dolphins begins preparation for the Jets.

OFFENSE

WR - Ted Ginn Jr., Ernest Wilford, Brandon London

LT - Jake Long (R), Ikechuku Ndukwe

LG - Justin Smiley, Shawn Murphy (R)

C - Samson Satele, Andy Alleman

RG - Donald Thomas (R), Shawn Murphy (R)

RT - Vernon Carey, Nate Garner (R)

TE - Anthony Fasano, David Martin, Sean Ryan

WR - Derek Hagan, Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess (R)

QB - Chad Pennington, Chad Henne (R), John Beck

RB - Ricky Williams, Ronnie Brown, Patrick Cobbs, Jalen Parmele (R)

FB - Boomer Grigsby, Anthony Fasano (H-back)

DEFENSE

LE - Kendall Langford (R), Randy Starks, Rodrique Wright

NT - Jason Ferguson, Randy Starks, Paul Soliai

RE - Vonnie Holliday, Phillip Merling (R), Lionel Dotson (R)

SLB - Joey Porter, Matt Roth

ILB - Channing Crowder, Reggie Torbor

ILB - Akin Ayodele, Reggie Torbor

WLB - Charlie Anderson, Quentin Moses

LCB - Will Allen, Nathan Jones, Joey Thomas

RCB - Andre Goodman', Michael Lehan

FS - Chris Crocker, Jason Allen

SS - Yeremiah Bell, Renaldo Hill

SPECIAL TEAMS

K - Dan Carpenter

P - Brandon Fields

LS - John Denney

PR - Ted Ginn Jr., Davon Bess (R)

KOR - Ted Ginn Jr., Patrick Cobbs, Jalen Parmele

Let me know what areas concern you the most?

Of course the Dolphins aren't done altering the roster, and probably still have a couple of moves to make on the waiver wire. There's also three vacancies on the practice squad and I suspect they'll add a linebacker, a nose tackle and another receiver.

What positions do think needs addressing on the Dolphins roster?

Deuces.

Why is Crocker ahead of Allen at FS?  I thought Allen was playing well enough to get the starting nod...I haven't seen too much out of Crocker.

Still waiting for them to put Anthony Armstrong on the pratice squad.  How long is he on waivers for before he's "cleared" them.

Is this an official depth chart?

Regardless, there's as little depth as possible at guard. Rookie Shawn Murphy is the only offensive guard... and he's backing up Donald Thomas (another rookie) and Justin Smiley, who had season-ending shoulder surgery last year. Waivers pickup Andy Alleman, backup center, is the obvious choice to fill in, but he saw NO playing time as a rookie for the Saints last year. None at all.

We're really thin at offensive tackle as well. Ndukwe was about an inch from getting cut and just-signed Nate Garner, a rookie, is the backup. Garner was waived by the Jets, so this might actually be a question of getting some insight into the Jets defense as much as anything.

We also need Lehan to get up to speed at corner after being limited by injury during most of camp. Goodman is a hazard at corner.

Soliai, Wright and possibly Dotson really seem expendable on the defensive line, which is actually reasonably strong.

It's no surprise that we could really use an outside linebacker opposite Porter (if healthy, otherwise instead of Porter). Matt Roth and Quentin Moses are not going to pressure anyone.

Our nickel and dime packages have looked good and the players seem to fit well. Safety isn't too much of a concern, either.

The offensive weapons look decent, although depth at tight end is NOT good. Considering how Parcell's et. al. like to use them (blocking out of the backfield, like a fullback), that's a big worry when you combine it with our ONE fullback. If Grigsby goes down, Parcells better have someone on speed dial. The Saints let TE go that had looked pretty good in preseason, can't remember his name, but I wouldn't mind if we took a good look at him.

If I had to describe our roster in 1 word: THIN

Really, really thin.

Due to Cam Cameron's bad talent evaluations and a lack of a good training camp and offseason regimen that resulted in a rash of injuries, this was the starting lineup for the final game against Cincinatti last season.  Players listed with their name's as strikethrough are no longer on the team.  Look how many of them there are:

OFFENSE

WR - Ted Ginn Jr.

LT - Vernon Carey

LG - Chris Liwienski

C - Samson Satele

RG - Rex Hadnot

RT - LJ Shelton

TE - Justin Peele

WR - Marty Booker

QB - Cleo Lemon

RB - Jesse Chatman

FB - Regan Mauia

DEFENSE

DE - Jason Taylor

NT - Steve Fifta

DT - Vonnie Holliday

DE - Matt Roth

OLB - Joey Porter

ILB - Derrick Pope

FS - Jason Allen

SS - Lance Schulters

SPECIAL TEAMS

K - Jay Feely

P - Brandon Fields

LS - John Denney

PR - Ted Ginn Jr.

KOR - Ted Ginn Jr., Lorenzo Booker

Now compare that starting lineup to the one that will face the Jets on Sunday.  I've put the new starters in italics.  Look how many of them there are.

There's roster turnover whenever a new coach takes over.......... but this looks like a complete overhaul.  This pretty much shows how incompetent Cam Cameron was and how essential it was for the new regime to fire him.

I am not sure of the rest, I am not overly familiar with the Dolphin roster, but I am 100% certain that one being crossed off is not proof that Cam is incompetent.

I am totally shocked that the Patriots haven't picked up any former dolphins yet.

Parcells does throw away good players, Belichick does pick up trash.

Your past front office would throw away players worth picking up that is no longer the case.

Sadly the Patriots are going to have to find a new farm team.   Angry

OK, you're right.  Definitely that one, and maybe one or two others.  I listed Vernon Carey as a new starter because he was playing left tackle all last season, whereas his natural position is right tackle where he has gone back to.

I'm trying to figure out how you equate this to Cameron, other than your blind hatered Tommy....Yet Randy Mueller had nothing to do with it? Huh

Lance Schulters - had been with the Dolphins in 2005...and was an injury replacement....
Rex Hadnot - Was drafted by the Dolphins in 2004 Cameron had nothing to do with Bringing him here...
LJ Shelton -Was here in 2006 Cameron had nothing do do with brining him here either...
Justin Peelle -Came here in 2006 Cameron had nothing to do with him either...
Marty Booker - came in 2004 in the Ogunleye trade...Nope Cameron had nothing to do witu bringin him in either....
Cleo Lemon - Brought in in 2005 Yep, no Cameron....
Derrick Pope- Drafted by the Dolphins in 2004,Nope no Cameron either...
Donnie Spragan - Brought in in 2005...Seeing the Theme...No Cam Cameron...

Chris Liwienski,Reagan Mauia,Jesse Chatman,Jay Feely, and Lorenzo Booker, and Lance Shlulters (perhaps Porter) are the only ones I think you can really Whine about Cameron bringing in...Alot of those guy's weren't starters, and if they were it was because of injury....

Just like you like to take blind stabs at Ricky, Brian Griese, and Trent Green.

You can't deny the fact that this team has only three returning starters on offense and defense.
