I was watching the RedSox today and they showed the scoreboard for the Yankees and Rays game. To the far left it had a number by each team like it 32 Tampa Bay 34 New york. What do these numbers mean, I have seen this before.

Now I knew it was the number of the pitcher but does anyone know why they do this? For as long as I can remember I have always wondered what the reason for this was?

I don't know.  It's not like I have memorized every pitcher's number from every team, but I would know who is was on my team.

It's the percentage of fantasy teams that own that player.
