This is a lyric in a song and it got me thinking. I have not seen a firefly in years. They were all over the place when I was a kid. Does anyone know what happened to them? Does anyone still see them? When was the last time you saw one? Does anyone care?

All summer I have been wondering where the hell all of the fireflies came from!  So to answer your question, they all moved to Mankato, MN.  I can not believe how many of them there were this year.

I read something somewhere, maybe National Geographic this past Summer that firefly habitat world wide has been shrinking because of guess what? That's right, human encroachment and development. Hooray for our species. Yay!

There were tons in Ohio and Penn this past summer.  My wife and I hadn't seen them in years and my kids had never seen them.  They had a blast playing with them. They litterally looked like Christmas lights on the side of the raod while we were driving down the road just outside of Cleveland.

I don't know what they are not in Florida anymore but they are certainly alive and well farthur north.

When I was kid in the 70's we played with them all the time.  I don't know when they left.

Me neither. When we lived in Texas, there were tons of them. They kind of went with summer. I like fireflies. We used to catch them in jars when I was younger.

I never saw one in California...the only thing I saw lighting up the sky in East Oakland were AK's!  Wink  My grandparents lived in northern Maine, however, and the times we went there in the summer they were everywhere.

I live in the sticks now and this thread has me thinking...I didn't see one this season.  Not one.

Not in the Bay area, bro!  Smiley  Meant to ask - what part of the bay do you live in?  I'm coming home for a visit this Christmas.

Here in Florida we have killed them with the aerial spraying of  the mosquito. They stopped this practice here in my county a few years ago and for the first couple of years it was crazy! I couldnt go out at night but, now the dragonflies and the bats are back. I have fewer mosquitos than when they we sprayed and for the first time in my daugthers 15 years she got  to see one lonely firefly!
