Cassel looked like shit his first games, despite being on a really good team that HADN'T given up. Orton looked like shit his first whole season starting, despite being on a good team that HADN'T given up. Drew Brees looked like shit his first season starting, despite being on a good team that HADN'T given up.

Is Beck a good quarterback? Will he ever be a good quarterback?

Hell if I know, but there's just no way you can make that call now. The people (fans) who insist on doing so anyway... well...

Cassels first game, 13/18 for 152 yards w/ a td.  Becks first game, 9/22 for 109 yards. Don't say they are comparable.  Beck played 5 games last year without looking like a professional quarterback.  Cassel will get a huge contract this offseason, Beck wouldn't get picked up if he were cut from the Dolphins.

Did you SEE Cassel's first handful of games? Sure, he racked up some nice numbers against the hapless Chiefs, but he looked COMPLETELY lost. He had absolutely no pocket presence and his decision making was a bit lacking (but his THREE YEARS on the bench probably helped that aspect tremendously).

He looked REALLY bad against us, the 49ers and the Chargers. At this point fans were screaming for Belicheck to bring in some retread veteran like local-favorite Culpepper.

60/107 (56.1%), 559yds, 1 TD, 3 INT, 62.0 rating

Brady Quinn through 4 games:
48/97 (49.5%), 563yds, 2 TD, 2 INT, 65.8 rating

So Beck was playing for a 1-15 team and was picked 31 spots later than we could have picked Quinn.  But instead, we should have gotten a QB with a rating that is almost (but not quite!) 4 points higher.  After sitting for his first season.

The jury is still out on Quinn (and Beck, for that matter).  But there is no reason to believe that Quinn was some sort of gamechanger.

How dare you introduce statistics that don't support their point!!

John Beck was sacked 10 times, Brady Quinn was sacked once.  Do you think this statistic (and the correlated fumble statistic) might have to do with the facts that:

1) one of them was actually playing during his rookie season, while the other was comfortably riding the pine?
2) one of them played for a far worse team than the other?

Also left unmentioned is that how, despite taking 9 less sacks than Beck, Brady Quinn is already out for the season with an injury.  Are we going to discuss durability as well?

Are you going to claim now that all sacks are created equal as support for your durability contention?

Are you now going to claim that all of the sacks that John Beck suffered should be blamed on his subpar O-line? Or do you think that maybe, just maybe, part of that was due to Beck's tendency to dance in place like Fred Astaire in the pocket while screaming "OH MY GOD, HERE COMES A TRUCK!!"

Quinn is a better QB than Beck... This is not based by comparing limited statistics and applying credence to whichever individual stat supports my argument the most. This is me watching both QBs in college and in the NFL and stating the opinion gained by firsthand viewing.
