Free agency begins in two days, and teams are desperately trying to get under the cap.  Here are some key players released by their teams in the past few days:

Tampa Bay- Derrick Brooks, Cato June, Warrick Dunn, Joey Galloway

Kansas City- Patrick Surtain, Donnie Edwards, Damon Huard

Carolina- Jeremy Bridges, DJ Hackett

Oakland- Kwame Harris, Justin Griffith

NY Jets- Chris Baker, Laverneous Coles

Washington- Marcus Washington

Jacksonville- Fred Taylor

I know some of these guys are old, and others were overpaid underperformers.  Would any of them be a good fit with the Dolphins?

Discuss.

Coles released by Jets

Posted: February 25th, 2009 | Adam Rank | Tags: Jacksonville Jaguars, Laveranues Coles, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets

The Newark Star Ledger is reporting that the Jets have released receiver Laveranues Coles, but both sides are leaving open the possibility of his return.

â€œWe didn’t leave on bad terms,” Coles said. “It’s not out of the question that I could come back.

I look at it as a long-term thing,” he said. “It’s something my agent (Roosevelt Barnes) and I (discussed) for a long time. I trust my agent. He’s been in my corner for a long time. He gave me his opinion. He said he truly believed we could get a long-term deal on the open market and I took his word for it.

â€œI want to go somewhere where I can finish my career. I don’t want to bounce from team to team. I hope to play another three or four years.”

But if Coles does not return to the Jets, where could the receiver land? One of the most obvious destinations could be Jacksonville, where Coles maintains a residence. The Jaguars could use some receivers after releasing enigmatic Jerry Porter. The Dolphins could be another team interest, pairing up Coles with former quarterback Chad Pennington.

I don't think any of the guys you mentioned would fit Tommy, but I think Coles might, especially with Penny returning for another year.  He could give our WR core the leadership it needs.

If I was Parcells, I'd snatch Coles up..... IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!  He can be had for a good price, not to mention Parcells was the one who drafted him.

Fred Taylor....

Good point.  I'll add that in.

Coles would be a great addition to the team.  Miami has a really young WR group, Coles would be a much better and more productive veteran WR than Ernest Wilford.

As much a we need a talented guy to go with Ginn and Camarillo, I'm not eager to spend a bunch for a 32 year old receiver.

We have 2 - 800 yard guys now (Camarillo was on pace for 900).  Six TDs from a WR would be nice.  We haven't seen that since Booker in 2006.

If Coles comes then who sits?  Bess?  No doubt Coles is better, but enough so to justify his price?

From pro-football-reference:
Coles - 5-11, 193 lbs, 31
Wilford - 6-4, 218 lbs, 30
Camarillo - 6-1, 190 lbs, 27
London -  6-4 , 210 lbs, 25
Ginn - 5-11, 178 lbs, 24
Bess - 5-11, 193 lbs, 24

I think we're forgetting the mentoring aspect. Our receivers are all very YOUNG. A good, accomplished veteran with a good attitude could do a lot to improve our young guys going forward, in addition to pushing them for playing time.

And Coles is Pennington's best friend ever.  I think he'd be a good fit, as much as I HATE HIM

That way I could wear my Surtain jersey again.

Probably.

Although I eventually got over my hatred for Pennington.
