Well its great for the Marlins and fans but I dont know about the location as its in a ghetto .. period. I have been to the orange bowl, and it will be interesting to see how many people will show up now.  I say fewer,   but congratulations.

I was hoping that this would happen in Ft. Lauderdale.  I think that putting a stadium that far South is probably a bad idea, and Miami is a commuter city -- I don't think that a lot of the people that work there actually live there.

I think they'll lose a lot, especially weeknights. There isn't enough time to leave work and get down there for a 7 PM start when you work until 5:30

People have no problems making games in the middle of the day in Wrigley. Why is it such a problem for a night game in Miami? No matter where they built that stadium, Miami is just a fair weather town when it comes to the Marlins. Maine has been saying this for a long time and is spot on with it.

Public transportation.

People in Chicago can leave their office, walk to a train, and get dropped off a few blocks from the doorstep of Wrigley.  Not only that, but people in Chicago actually like the Cubs. Roll Eyes

In Miami, especially this particular location, anyone who doesn't live in Little Havana has to drive like 30+ minutes to get here, or take the park-n-ride which takes even longer.  And the Marlins' fan following isn't strong enough at this point to make people want to take days off from work to go to a baseball game.  People here are all very money-driven and thus career-driven.  Not to mention that some morons are still pissed about the firesale of 1997. Roll Eyes

If the stadium deal includes highway off-ramps directly to the stadium and cleaning up the surrounding area, then it will be good.  There are already plans for two giant parking garages.  The Marlins are obviously excited about it and I think we have to wait and see before we will know the real effects.

I also would have liked to see it in Broward county but its for selfish reasons.  Going to Panthers' games is a breeze while going to Heat games is a huge hassle.  It would have been nice for someone to drop this stadium on the beach somewhere, to really showcase what south Florida is all about.

Even though you don't directly say it here, this supports my position that it doesn't matter where they built the stadium.

Miami isn't a centralized population center, like Chicago is.

That's the major difference.  Potential fans live all around Wrigley in giant high rises and stuff.  Miami isn't set up like that, especially where the stadium is.  It's a slum area.  The real population for Marlins games comes from all around, via 30 minute-1 hr car rides.

I was hoping they could do downtown Ft. Lauderdale and have people who actually live near it go, plus people leaving work.  I think that people aren't willing to travel for a Marlin game.

Do you think the retractable roof will also help attendance,I know that's part of the complaint in Dolphins stadium...

I think it will... to an extent.  At 7 pm on a weeknight when it is pouring rain, no one wants to go to a game.  However, location and baseball economics in South Florida will always be the main issues.

I think the retractable roof helps 2 things.

1.) Now when it rains, there's a delay.  if there's a delay for a long time (an hour or more) people leave so when they get back to playing there's like 40 people left in the stands.

2.) Sunday afternoon games in the summer are BRUTAL.  I have elected never to go to any day games during the summer because of this.  I would hope that they'd close the roof to alleviate people from coming home with 2nd degree burns on their arms and legs.

The roof will help more for this reason than any other.  And it's intended for this reason more than any other.
