Losman, 28, said Tuesday night he has signed with the Las Vegas entry of the start-up United Football League, where he will be coached by former Giants boss Jim Fassel. He immediately becomes the league's marquee player, a former first round pick who was Buffalo's starting quarterback 33 times over the past four seasons.

UFL  , the New USFL   wich league will fail.    While i do hope there will be football in the spring,  i just think the NFL will ruin any new hopes of another football league.

the UFL has a great shot at succeeding, since they're not competing directly with the NFL.  they're going after good players, "checkered past" players, etc.  they're in markets where the NFL isn't, and they're also playing on diff days/months.  on top of that, knowing who's behind the league makes me believe in it.   my neighbor (a hugely successful guy responsible for NFL marketing, the NFL QB club, etc) is one of the founders, watch out.

I admire your optimism Tony, but I'm sure someone also said the same thing about the USFL, XFL, World League, Arena, etc. They are planning to play football in October & November on Thursday & Friday nights. I doubt seriously they are going to even beat the college games in ratings on those nights. They market to "future stars" but the only problem is that with the exception of a very select few the "future stars" of the NFL actually start their careers in the NFL. I may go to some games since we will have a local team, but don't expect this to be a successful league.

Does anyone know if the UFL has the same age requirement as the NFL (3 years after high school graduation)?

Personally I would like to see football and basketball have a duel system like baseball and hockey has.

In both hockey and baseball a high school grad can either go to college or the minor leagues.  In basketball or football the route is pretty much only college.  While this does make for some great college sports programs I think the system is unfair both the the athletes and non-athlete students at those schools.

I would like to see a system in which college teams are composed soley of college players that can meet the schools admissions policies even without their athletic ability and those people who would not got to college but for their athletics would go to the minor leagues.

I wonder if the UFL is going to get blocked from getting any highlights or coverage like the XFL did.  ESPN refused to show any highlights of it until the championship game, a lot of local papers refused to run any stories about it.  That's ultimately what cost the XFL so much money and they had to fold because it pretty much shut down the free market avenues most sports take for granted.

The XFL was a gimmick, though, and the product wasn't very good.  They focused on the personalities instead of the play.

^^^^

Dave you can make the case for anything ever marketed as being a gimmick.  Other leagues in the past just ran out of money.  The XFL had all the "serious" media turned against it before they even got started.  The NFL is based on personalities too, it just doesn't have Vince McMahon as an owner.

As soon as his name was associated with it, they went oh well he wrestles and they have a team in Las Vegas, so therefore the outcome MUST be rigged and we're not going to report on it.
