It is called station house bail.

You can hold a guy with out filing charges for a finite period of time (typically 48 hours) afterwhich you must arriagn him in front of a judge, charge him with a crime and at that time the judge will hold a bail hearing.  While the judge is not required to offer bail, the judge must hold a bail hearing and it is a very formal process.

For minor crimes the police (no judge involved) will sometimes offer the defendant the option to post bail or release him on PR until the arraignment.

$50K is an outragious sum given the nature of the crime and the almost non-existent risk of flight.  IMHO he should have been released PR.

He'll gte his $50K back shortly.  And he may have grounds for a lawsuit in this case.

I have never met anyone who is as lawsuit happy as you.  Do you have every tort lawyer in Miami on speed dial?

He has have grounds to sue his girlfriend for slander/false report to the cops.  If he wastes his time doing so he is an even bigger fool than I think he is.  And I consider him pretty dumb to begin with.

If what she alleges happened is true, then the Chargers have a very serious problem on their hands. And I mean a problem much worse than Steelers have with Ben......

The allegation is that this 265 lb linebacker physically assaulted a 4'10", 95lb girl and did not leave a single mark or cause any injury whatsoever. If he can't take down this chick, what chance does he have at tackling a runningback or getting past the o-line to sack the QB. They may have the most ineffective defensive player in the entire NFL.

Charger fans should be worried, if this story is true. Very worried.

ESPN reports that the DA has decided NOT to charge Merriman.
