Wait a minute guys, there's two sides to being a one-hit wonder.

I really can't think of a one hit wonder because most of them are on world radio stations. By the modern term of one hit wonder, I'll have to go with Bonnie Tyler (Total Eclipse of The Heart).

Some of these people got fed up with show business and left all together. Some of them weren't given artistic control that they wanted and went overseas as independent artists.

Lil B mentioned Eddy Grant. Grant is an international musician whose music "Electric Avenue" and "Romancing the Stone" just happened to hit in the US. He runs his own record company out of Jamaica and produces songs with David Bowie, Sting and a host of others.

Then there are the one hit wonders that are known all over the world for other music but a strategically kept out of America because they understand songwriting and composition better than most American artists who make s*(*.

Look at the 80's which was the "Second British Invasion movement" (the first being the Beatles, Stones and Clapton). International artists invaded the charts and put many American artists to shame in almost every genre, including Soul music. A-ha, Nena, Duran Duran, Men Without Hats, Tears for Fears, I could go on and on. They were established international artists before they became a staple on American radio. I saw Nena live in a German bar when "99 Luftballoons" was released and she gave me a hug and I haven't taken a bath since!

The "big three" Sony, Capital and Universal made sure that there would not be a British invasion number 3 so they limited many overseas acts by not signing them who were still making great music. They cut them all out of American radio and made it "appear" that they were one hit wonders. Check out the list...

Joe Jackson, The Style Council, Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby, Morrissey, Swing Out Sister. These bands are still making good music.

And out of all of these acts, they promote the sorriest band that I've ever heard, U2. U2 hasn't made anything meaningful since the Joshua Tree and that was in 1987.

Many American artists had to leave the country to get a fair record deal (Tina Turner and Marvin Gaye).

American music is bull*(*(. It's corporitized. If you're listing to Y-100 in the Miami-Ft.Lauderdale area, your programming manager is in NY telling the DJ's to play Britney Spears every 40 minutes. You can't request nothing because they are programming you on what THEY want you to hear.

Thanks to Bill Clinton signing the Telecommunications Act of 1996, community radio got killed which introduced these "one hit wonders" to the world without having to sell out their soul or ass to the record industry. Thank God for the Internet.

So the one hit wonders are still making good music. You'll have to find it on the Internet.

You guys know that after Queen's lawyers got done taking his ass to the cleaners, he didn't make one dollar off that song.

Ummm it was Queen and David Bowie who collaborated on that song. Also there was a settlement for around 4 million and credit for the song. They did not take him to the cleaners as there was never a court case.

The Knack had another hit Stroke- Good Girls Dont
STL- Grandmaster Flash had another hit with White Lines

Nice rant but I disagree on several points (all opinion). First the whole 80's music scene is a guilty pleasure of mine. I really hate the fact that I can recognize so much of it because it is all poppy and crap. I'm not a fan of commercial radio so these European artists really aren't any better than the radio crap played here in my opinion.

Another thing I disagree with is your mention of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 introducing one hit wonders. These groups all splashed in the 80's long before this act passed. The decentralization of companies was already well on its way anyway. It didn't cause the phenomena of corporate giants in communications, but it didn't help break them up either.
